Alpine is said to be developing an SUV which is believed to be the Porsche Macan’s closest rival. According to AutoExpress, the newly revived performance brand has been looking to release a small SUV following the launch of the A110 at this year’s Geneva Auto Show.
The fact that Renault and Nissan have what it takes to make it big in the SUV segment means that Alpine won’t have to start from scratch in developing a new SUV. The family utility vehicle will be taking its styling cues from the mid-engine sports coupe and is expected to reveal the vehicle by 2019.
To be at par with Porsche’s best-selling vehicle, perhaps the French marque only has to ensure that the SUV will be carrying the sports DNA which Alpine is known for.
Likewise, they may have to consider shaving off a few pounds or maybe adding a four wheel drive layout in the process for unmatched performance.
We believe that it would be a good idea if the new Alpine SUV should come with the same 1.8 liter turbo engine similar to the A110. That should be enough to produce around 252 to 300hp. In addition, Alpine should offer not just one platform. Like Porsche’s SUV, options for either rear wheel or all-wheel drive set up should be available. There should also be a four wheel steering option like those on Renault’s newest model, the Megane RS.
Although most people associate Alpine with their traditional sports cars and the new A110, somehow, Porsche’s best-selling models are their SUVs such as the Macan and Cayenne. This very much explains why Alpine needs to develop similar a body style in order to thrive in the very tight competition. An option for either electric or hybrid would be a good place to start as well. Given the increasing demand for big sized family vehicles, the French performance brand’s superb lightweight engineering will definitely make it one of the most sought-after SUVs in the market.
As for the designing cues, we believe the upcoming Alpine SUV is a bit more luxurious than the A110 sports coupe. The SUV will come with bucket seats at the front with either a two- or three- seat option for the second row. At the very least, the lightweight sports car’s styling cues will make it a very attractive vehicle in its class. Among its distinctive features is a single tail light and dual front light design that looks perfect either on a coupe or an SUV.
