At the Auto China 2012 in Beijing, Audi unveiled the A6 L e-Tron Concept, its first luxury-class e-tron concept car. Based on the new Audi A6 L a.k.a. Audi’s bestselling model in China, the new concept car combines the TFSI engine with an electric motor.

This means that under the hood we will find a 2.0 TFSI that delivers 155 kW (211 hp) but also an electric motor with 70 kW (95 hp) peak power. The concept has also a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery located in a collision-protected space at the rear of the vehicle. As expected, the A6 L e-Tron Concept offers can act as an electric car and can travel up to 80 km (49.71 miles) at a constant speed of 60 km/h (37.28 mph).

The new A6 L e-Tron Concept measures has a 3.01 meter (9.88 feet) wheelbase, is 5.02 meters (16.47 feet) long and 1.87 meters (6.14 feet) wide, but only 1.46 meters (4.79 feet) tall. Comparing it with the production car, the concept car features a single-frame grille with slender cross-bars and the nearly covered air intakes, 21-inch wheels in e-tron design and a special rear diffuser.

Moreover, the A6 L e-Tron features a luxurious interior and offers a lot of space at all seating positions. The seats offer ventilation and massage functions, the Bose surround system delivers good sound, and the deluxe automatic air conditioning system with air ionizer ensures a pleasant climate in the car.

Noted for its elegant style, the A6 L e-tron concept from Audi has an overall length of 16.47 feet (5.02 meters), width of 6.14 feet (1.87 meters), and height of 4.79 feet (1.46 meters). In terms of wheelbase, the one fitted in this sedan measures 9.88 feet (3.01 meters). The combination of the use of sharp lines on the sides, the extended yet low roof line, plus the long engine hood, gives it that sportier appearance.

Helping highlight its determined expression are the signature LED headlights of the brand. In terms of looks, the A6 L e-tron concept’s body is similar to that of its namesake, the A6 L. By making full use of the ultra-lightweight principle, it not only results in the body being lightweight but also maximizes the rigidity, and with it, safety.

Since 10% of the body is composed of aluminum, this makes it lighter by as much as 15% when compared to vehicles with a body made of all-steel. The use of aluminum is not limited to the body as some parts of the exterior skin and the load-bearing structure are made up of aluminum as well. Meanwhile the occupant cell has some parts made of high-tech steel. While this concept car is indeed lightweight, Audi revealed that each new model that comes out will be lighter than the previous model. As such, this means the brand is going the other way compared to its rivals.

To make this possible, the brand said that the developers are expected to make good use of a mix of different and new materials like carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. For the style of the exterior, it is clear that there are differences when compared to the production models. The body itself for example reveals the prototype technology being used. Just under the engine hood, the components of the engine are hidden through a styling capsule. To show that the concept car makes use of a hybrid drive, there is a ribbed curve in the middle.

On the front area, it has the features that are included as standard in all of the e-tron models. This is the single-frame grille that has the thin cross-bars and the air intakes that despite being almost covered, is able to grab one’s attention. Putting emphasis on the progressive characteristics of this model is the special diffuser on the rear and the strong 21-inch wheels.
