Audi A6 Sedan takes the International Design Excellence Award 2012 (IDEA)

Article by Christian A., on August 2, 2012

Audi A6 Sedan won the International Design Excellence Award 2012 (IDEA) for its innovative design. This design award is one of the most prestigious in the U.S. The A6 family seems to be on a roll as it was recently given the red dot award.

A6 Sedan was able to fend off its competition from around the world to get the Silver Award in the ‘Transportation’ category of the International Design Excellence Award 2012. Wolfgang Egger, Audi’s Head of Design, is glad that the model isn’t admired just by its customers in Europe. Rather, the award is proof that its design idiom is understood and is well-accepted by consumers in the U.S.

Egger said that what the Industrial Designers Society of America liked about the model are its dynamic looks and the interplay of design idiom and innovative technology in the A6 Sedan. He added that the brand claim of “Vorsprung durch Technik” indicates that the company considers it very significant to match technology and design perfectly.

The IDEA awards have been in the U.S. for 32 years. The jury consists of 19 high-ranking experts from business, universities and design circles. The Audi A6 family won the red dot award on top of the IDEA award.

The international jury applauded the Sedan, the A6 Avant and the A6 allroad Quattro for its excellent design quality. On July 2, the Audi Design Team was handed the award during the red dot presentation ceremony in Essen on July 2.

Preparing for the Audi A6 L e-Tron

Audi A6 L e-tron’s refined design is noteworthy. The sedan has a 3.01-metre (9.88 feet) wheelbase, a 5.02-metre (16.47 feet) length, and a 1.87-metre (6.14 feet) width, but it is just 1.46 metres (4.79 feet) high. An overall sporty appearance comes from a long hood, a low, stretched roof line, and clean side lines. Audi’s distinctive LED headlights accentuate the vehicle's resolute look.

The car differs from the production model with its exterior design. In the front, a single-frame grille crossed with sleek bars and almost completely covered air intakes, both signature e-tron features, charm the beholder. Strong e-tron designed 21-inch wheels and exclusive rear diffuser are highlights of the car's distinctive traits. Signatures on the body recall the prototype, while the engine components are stylishly encapsulated under the hood. A ribbed contour at the centre signifies it as a hybrid.

A light, strong body with Audi ultra

The Audi A6 L e-tron concept body is the same as the Audi A6 L. By applying the ultra-lightweight principle, it fully maximises its lightness, firmness, and safety. Made of about 10% aluminium, it is approximately 15% lighter than an all-steel equivalent. Aluminium parts in the load-bearing structure and exterior, as well as the advanced steel in the occupant cell, make the body considerably lighter.

Every Audi model weighs less than the previous one. Because of this, Audi is the leader in turning the increasing weight spiral down. Designers astutely create new material combinations, including carbon fibre-reinforced polymers (CFRP). Audi does not engineer ultra-lightweight builds using only one material. Instead, Audi approaches with a flexibility by utilizing wide range; still with the goal of attaining the most optimal performance with the lowest material use.
