Audi begins 2015 TT Roadster production at its Gyor site in Hungary

Audi has started production of the 2015 TT Roadster at its Gyor site in Hugary. The launch was graced by Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Rupert Stadler, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and the Mayor Zsolt Borkai of of Győr. The Audi TT Roadster will be the fourth Audi model to go into series production at Audi Hungaria following the A3 Sedan, A3 Cabriolet and TT Coupe.

Rupert remarked that the start of production of the new Audi TT Roadster underscores Audi Hungaria’s position in the carmaker’s global production network. Audi started full vehicle production at its site in Győr, Hungary in June 2013.

Prior to that, the carmaker is already building engines at the site. So far, the site has churned out over 100,000 cars. Audi Hungaria’s new auto plant in Gyor is currently being manned by a 4,000-strong workforce. Hubert Waltl, Board of Management Member for Production at Audi, remarked that the move to build a plant in Gyor 21 years ago a decisive step in its development into an international group.

The first Audi TT was developed two decades ago. Back then; the first TT model was introduced as a coupe even though it was originally designed as a roadster. After all those years, the arcs at the front and rear wheel remain as the model’s iconic design. In fact, Audi TT’s classic architecture has made the brand a timeless favourite among automobile enthusiasts. Because of this, both the TT and TT Roadster have driven Audi to continually develop its iconic brand.

Now on its 3rd generation, Audi brings back the TT Roadster bearing a more powerful and compact vehicle on the road. The new roadster stands on a wheelbase measuring 8.2ft with 13.7ft. overall length. Audi’s third generation TT Roadster is also 0.8-inches shorter and 0.4-inches narrower than the previous model. Also with short overhangs, the new TT’s height and width now falls down to 4.4ft and 6.0ft respectively.

Soon after its debut, the German Design Council gave two recognitions to the TT Coupé. Aside from receiving the “Innovation of the Year” award, the “2+2 seater” sports coupe also won the “German Design Award” under the “Transportation and Public Design” category.

Audi’s design team got most of their ideas from the classic TT Roadster. For this new entry, the designers refined the TT’s broad shoulders and reshaped the side sills and wheel arches to look more powerful. This can be seen on the arch at the front wheel that crosses the engine hood all the way to the shoulder line. As for the rear section, the tailpipes and taillights blend seamlessly with the rest of the features just like the original roadster.

Audi TT Roadster Production Begins

As of today, the new generation of the Audi TT Roadster* is driving off the assembly lines at Audi Hungaria. The official starting signal was given by Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, in the presence of numerous politicians and businesspeople including Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, and the Mayor of Győr, Zsolt Borkai. After the A3 Sedan*, A3 Cabriolet* and TT Coupe*, this is the fourth Audi model to go into series production at the new automobile factory.

“The start of production of the new Audi TT Roadster underscores Audi Hungaria’s position in our worldwide production network,” stated Audi CEO Rupert Stadler. “The Győr site makes a significant contribution to our growth and strengthens our international competitiveness.”

Audi commenced full automobile production in Győr, in addition to the existing engine production there, in June 2013. Since then, more than 100,000 cars have left the assembly lines. Audi Hungaria employs approximately 4,000 people at the new automobile factory – most of the total of more than 5,000 employees that the company has recruited since 2010.

“Győr became the first Audi plant outside Germany 21 years ago; that was a decisive step taken by the company in its development into an international group,” pointed out Dr. Hubert Waltl, Board of Management Member for Production at AUDI AG. “The site’s success story shows that the decision was right.”

Prof. h.c. Thomas Sigi, Board of Management Member for Human Resources at AUDI AG, emphasized that more than 11,000 high-quality jobs had been created at the site since then. “This year, Audi Hungaria was voted the most attractive employer in Hungary for the sixth time,” continued Sigi.

The Chairman of the Works Council of AUDI AG, Peter Mosch, described the start of production of the Audi TT Roadster in Győr as right and pioneering. “International growth also strengthens the sites in Germany. That is crucial for our path into the future,” stated Mosch.

The new Audi TT sets new standards in terms of design, powertrain and suspension. A particular highlight of the compact two-seater is the Audi virtual cockpit. This digital display combination replaces analog instruments and for the first time places all the relevant information in the driver’s field of vision. The Audi TT has already been recognized for this new display and operating system with the Car Connectivity Award and the prize for Interior Innovation of the Year in the Automotive Interiors Expo Awards.
