Audi is bringing more smiles to its luxury car fans in the United States, particularly to those planning to acquire their first premium vehicle. It isn’t only that Audi is known for sometimes offering less expensive cars than main rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the German luxury group is also planning to launch not just one but five new vehicles in the US.
Audi has already leaked plans to launch the A3 sedan four-door ($29,900 MSRP) and is launching four new cars in the next 16 months. Yes, the carmaker is planning to bring to the US the complete A3 family, including the cabriolet, TDI clean diesel, S3 and A3 e-tron PHEV.
S3 is basically a performance version of the A3 while the A3 TDI is an A3 saloon fitted with a Golf engine. The Audi e-tron is basically a plugin hybrid – it is just the way the carmaker wants to call it.
The e-tron is a hatchback powered by a 150PS 1.4-liter turbo and an electric motor – bringing the total output to 205 hp. While the e-tron boasts of the power of a 2-liter TFSI, it only consumes 1.5 liter of fuel per 100km (European cycle) or 157 miles per gallon (US).
Needless to say, the Audi S3 Sedan boasts excellent dynamics, partly thanks to its lightweight construction. Featuring a manual gearbox, the new Audi S3 Sedan only has a curb weight of 1,430 kilograms (3,152.61 lbs). This was achieved by employing ultra high-strength steels in several sections of the occupant cell and aluminum for the engine bonnet.
The excellent dynamics of the new Audi S3 Sedan is especially conveyed through its dominantly sporty appearance. This was defined by its body that is stretched visually, as made possible by the flat engine hood, precisely drawn lines and curved surfaces as well as flat roof arch. The sporty appearance of the new S3 Sedan is underscored by the fact that it measures 4,469 mm (14.66 ft.) in length, 1,796 mm (5.80 ft) in width and 1,392 mm (4.57 ft) in height, with a long wheelbase of 2,631 mm (8.63 ft).
As designed, the new S3 Sedan exudes a high-performance look, thanks to a number of sporty details. These include the S-specific Singleframe grille with aluminum-look, double horizontal bars, surrounded by a chrome frame with insert finished in matt platinum gray. This grille could be flanked by optional LED headlights. The appearance of the front end is completed by a bumper with air inlets framed with strongly flared edges. These air inlets are filled with aluminum-look double ribs and honeycomb inserts.
