Both the Bentley Continental GT V8 coupé and the GTC V8 convertible are equipped with the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter engine. One of its main features is that it comes with variable displacement and by combining this with the advanced engine management system, it allows for an effortless, and almost unnoticeable shift to the V4 mode from V8 mode, especially when running under light throttle load.
Other features of this V8 engine include lower friction bearings, high pressure direct injection, and thermal management. It even offers energy recuperation through a charging system and a pioneering turbo charging packaging that allows for enhanced efficiency. In terms of power, the V8 engine is able to deliver an output of 500 bhp (373 kW/507 PS) and torque of 6,000 rpm.
Meanwhile, peak torque is at 487 lb.-ft. (660 Nm) and is accessible on the whole rev range starting from 1,700 rpm and going all the way to 5,000 rpm. This allows for performance that is more thrilling with power delivery being effortless, both qualities Bentley has long been known for. Coupled with the automatic 8-speed transmission which sports a close ratio, it allows the models to reach a maximum speed of at least 180 mph (290 km/h) with acceleration from 0 mph to 60 mph (0 km/h to 100 km/h) achieved in under 5 seconds.
Aside from the excellent performance it offers, the engine is also able to give the V8 Continental models the same high level of fuel efficiency, as well as CO2 emissions that have never been seen before in the luxury performance class. With a single full tank of fuel, the models are able to travel at least 500 miles (800 km).
With the V8 Continental models and the engine, Bentley revealed that it is able to meet its environmental promise to create a powertrain that improves both fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions by 40%. All of these mean that the V8 Continental models are able to attain impressive power-to-emission levels especially for the high luxury sports car segment. Bentley revealed that the official and full figures will be released during the early part of 2012.
