Bentley Mulsanne Convertible is in the works again, CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer says

Article by Christian A., on August 23, 2014

Back in 2012, Bentley released the first sketches with the Mulsanne Convertible, but in September 2013 company’s CEO Wolfgang Schreiber told the reporters that they will not produce such a vehicle due to the lack of demand. Now, Bentley has a new CEO, Wolfgang Duerheimer, and the Mulsanne Convertible is back on track.

The convertible version of the Bentley Mulsanne was in fact a project started by Wolfgang Duerheimer but after his departure from Bentley in 2012, Schreiber killed the project. Now that Duerheimer is back he was a bit irritated when he found out that now work has been done on the project but said last weekend at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance that the engineers are working again on the convertible.

The Mulsanne Convertible will be a successor to the iconic Bentley Azure. We expect the open top version of the Mulsanne to use the same engine as the sedan, which means it will be powered by the 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 505 bhp (377 kW) at 4,200 rpm and staggering 1,020 Nm (752 lb-ft) of torque.

The sedan is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.3 seconds (0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds), while top speed is 184 mph or 296 km/h.

As you can see from the official sketches, the Mulsanne Convertible will share the design with the sedan version and will be fitted with a conventional soft-top rather than a stylish hardtop. Still, we expect it to be the most elegant and sophisticated convertible in the world.

Bentley Grand Convertible Concept

The new Bentley Grand Convertible is how the carmaker envisions the ultimate expression of British automotive luxury. Considered as the most sophisticated open-top car so far from Bentley, the Grand Convertible offers an iconic yet understated style. Handcrafted using the finest materials, the Grand Convertible could be regarded as the ultimate in the world of open-top motoring.

Wolfgang Durheimer, Bentley chairman and chief executive, remarked that Bentley Grand Convertible is a demonstration of the carmaker’s aim to create the ultimate convertible Grand Tourer that embodies elegance. He quipped that the Bentley Grand Convertible combines the opulent experience offered by the Mulsanne and the indulgence delivered open-air touring, while still effortlessly fusing luxury and performance. Depending on customer response, the Bentley Grand Convertible could transform from a concept into a production car. Once that happens, Durheimer said the vehicle will be a highly exclusive, limited collector's item.

The new Grand Convertible is wrapped in Sequin Blue, a bespoke color that originated from a single sequin from a client’s haute couture gown, while its bonnet and windscreen frame are finished in silver "liquid metal." This elegant Sequin Blue finish is contrasted by the hand-finished Bentley directional wheels, which indicate the huge amount of power lurking underneath its hood.

Power is derived from the legendary 6.752-cc twin-turbo V8 engine that is shared with the flagship Mulsanne. This mill provides 537 PS (530 bhp / 395 kW) of max output and 1,100 Nm (811 lb.-ft) of peak torque, allowing the Grand Convertible to deliver its promise of effortless performance and unmatched style.
