Back in 2012, Bentley released the first sketches with the Mulsanne Convertible, but in September 2013 company’s CEO Wolfgang Schreiber told the reporters that they will not produce such a vehicle due to the lack of demand. Now, Bentley has a new CEO, Wolfgang Duerheimer, and the Mulsanne Convertible is back on track.
The convertible version of the Bentley Mulsanne was in fact a project started by Wolfgang Duerheimer but after his departure from Bentley in 2012, Schreiber killed the project. Now that Duerheimer is back he was a bit irritated when he found out that now work has been done on the project but said last weekend at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance that the engineers are working again on the convertible.
The Mulsanne Convertible will be a successor to the iconic Bentley Azure. We expect the open top version of the Mulsanne to use the same engine as the sedan, which means it will be powered by the 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 505 bhp (377 kW) at 4,200 rpm and staggering 1,020 Nm (752 lb-ft) of torque.
The sedan is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.3 seconds (0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds), while top speed is 184 mph or 296 km/h.
As you can see from the official sketches, the Mulsanne Convertible will share the design with the sedan version and will be fitted with a conventional soft-top rather than a stylish hardtop. Still, we expect it to be the most elegant and sophisticated convertible in the world.
