Article by Christian A., on December 27, 2013

Ok, we have to admit that we already knew a Gran Coupe version of the BMW 4-Series was coming but today, the first patent drawings emerged on the Web. Set to take on cars such as the Audi A5 Sportback, the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe will probably be introduced in March at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

Regarding the design, the front and rear design is the same seen on the 4-Series Coupe, but the model is expected to use a longer wheelbase in order to offer more space for the rear passengers. Just like the coupe, we expect to see the 4-Series Gran Coupe in three equipment combinations – Sport Line, Modern Line and Luxury Line - but also with a stylish M Sport Package for those who want even more.

Under the hood, we will see only engines that use the BMW Twin Power Turbo technology. This means that the 435i Gran Coupe will use a 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line petrol engine rated at 306 hp (225 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. The 428i Gran Coupe will use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine developing 245 hp (180 kW) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft).

420d Gran Coupe will get a 2.0-liter diesel engine with 184 hp, while the 430d Gran Coupe will get the same engine with 258 hp (190 kW) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque. The 435d Gran Coupe will be the most powerful diesel-powered model as it will use a 3.0-liter diesel engine delivering 313 hp (230 kW) and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) of torque.

The broadened roofline emphasizes the style and magnificence of the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé, while setting new benchmarks for aesthetics in the midsize segment that likewise have definitive practical benefits. For instance, there is more space in the interior, not to mention extra comfortability. The boot volume of 480 liters is 35 liters bigger than that of the two-door edition for added convenience in meeting the difficulties of day-to-day driving conditions with the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé.

Dynamic and elegant concept with functional elements

When contrasted with a two-door coupé, the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé provides effortless access to passengers when entering or leaving the car, all thanks to the four-door configuration. The doors are frameless, bearing the trademark design components of BMW midsize cars that showcase the classiness of the vehicle concept. The functional style of the 4+1 seater is accentuated by noticeable round instruments with a black panel appearance and the free-standing screen iDrive monitor. The broad-access boot opening and sizable gear area allow for a much easier loading and unloading work.

40:20:40 split folding backrest of the back seat guarantees extra versatility. The peak volume of the boot is 1,300 liters and is top-of-the-line with regards to the sophisticated four-door vehicles offered as of now. Its boot lid is furnished as standard with an automatic opening and closing mechanism for ultimate convenience, and the Smart Opener component can be activated to open and close the top with just a movement of the foot.
