BMW Vision Gran Turismo is a virtual race car, taking to the Gran Turismo 6 racetrack. Gran Turismo 6 is the racing title that is exclusively available on PlayStation 3. BMW Group Design created the race car, which boasts a virtual 3-liter 6-cylinder inline engine. This engine was developed by BMW M GmbH and delivers a 404-kW/549-hp peak performance, as well as optimum handling and control, and fast laps.
According to Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, VP for Brand Communication at BMW, BMW i, and BMW M, the development of BMW Vision Gran Turismo is the result of years of motorsports experience, combined with signature BMW Design. He said that the race car looks into future racing trends, as well as allows gaming fans to experience the BMW racing quality even more.
The BMW design team followed in the tradition of BMW’s successful touring cars in the 1970s when it came up with an uncompromising and modern road racer. Moreover, a dynamic silhouette and crisp proportions lend an appearance of speed to BMW Vision Gran Turismo, even when idle. Front and rear spoilers guarantee optimum down-force, while air conduction elements lessen drag as well as decrease the total weight of the vehicle by using carbon fiber. What’s more, the BMW M’s paint finish traces the airstream’s flow, recalling the successes of the BMW Motorsports.
Karim Habib, BMW Automobiles’ head of design, said that the Vision Gran Turismo is all about BMW sportiness and dynamics. It is a pure and precise driving machine that is designed and engineered to race and win, he added.
BMW Vision Gran Turismo’s technology is as impressive as its design is uncompromising. Its powerful engine, complete with M TwinPower Turbo technology, promises up to 404 kW/549 hp of power between 6,200 min-1 and 7,300 min-1. Meanwhile, its 680-Nm peak torque is developed at 1,900 rpm. A sequential 6-speed transmission, which is operated by steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles, distributes power from the engine to driven rear axle. BMW Vision Gran Turismo weighs only 1,180 kg and showcases outstanding performance characteristics that include ideal 50:50 axle load distribution.
To mark the 15th anniversary of the game last year, Polyphony Digital Inc. President and Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi invited leading carmakers to contribute to the game series. He called upon design departments to look to the future then share with the gaming community ground-breaking concept models. The virtual cars were integrated gradually to the new Gran Turismo 6 through online updates.
According to Yamauchi, he eagerly awaited what kind of car BMW will be coming up with. The result is a Vision Gran Turismo sports car that was very clearly a BMW and that really shows the brand’s DNA. He added that the Vision GT car is highly recognizable as a BMW because of its compact size, rear overfenders, and wide front.
