BMW i9 coming in 2016, will celebrate the company’s centenary

BMW will celebrate its centenary in 2016 and as a result, the Bavarian manufacturer has a big surprise for its fans. The German carmaker will roll out the i9 hybrid supercar, which will continue the tradition of the M1. According to Automotorundsport, the new i9 is actually a super-i8 and deserves the i10 name but due to the fact that Hyundai already offers a model that has that name, BMW had to change it.

I9 will have a curb weight of 1490 kg, which means it will be heavier than the i8, and will be capable to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than four seconds. Just like the i8, the BMW i9 will carry the combustion engine at the front, while the rear axle will be powered by the electric motor.

For those who don’t know, the BMW i8 is powered by a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo petrol engine that generates 231 hp (170 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. In addition, the vehicle uses an electric motor that produces 131 hp (96 kW) and 250 Nm of torque.

With a total output of 362 hp (266 kW) and 570 Nm of torque, the hybrid system pushes the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h or 155 mph.

The BMW i8 is definitely a new generation of sports car as evident in its dynamic proportions, innovative design features, low-slung silhouette and sporty lines. Combining the signature features of the BMW brand and the design language developed just for BMW i cars, the new i8 plug-in hybrid sports car offers a progressive appearance that truly conveys its performance, efficiency and premium character.

Essentially, the new BMW i8 is the first sports car in the world to be created with sustainability as its main concept. Its unmistakable, charming appearance can be traced to a design project called as the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics. This design prototype was further refined to become the BMW i8 Concept that was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. This design concept was virtually unchanged for the production version.

Both the exterior and interior of the new BMW i8 elegantly yet sportily reinterpret BMW’s Sheer Driving Pleasure value. Its forward-looking appearance is defined by minimalist lines as well as homogeneous surfaces marked by some crisp edges and function-focused elements.

The new BMW i8 is basically the second series-produced BMW i model brought to the road. As such, the new i8 preaches the versatile nature of the BMW I design language. This unmistakable design language communicates not just pure driving pleasure and efficiency, but also lightness and, safety – attributes all shared by the new i8 plug-in hybrid sports car shares and the BMW i3 all-electric hatchback.

The design versatility of the new i8 is made possible by the fact that it is underpinned by the groundbreaking LifeDrive architecture. Its Life module boasts of a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell as its central element and is fixed to the aluminum Drive module that accommodates all the drive and chassis technology. This characteristic two-way split is evident both the outside and the inside of the BMW i8 through the visible layering and intertwining of different surfaces. Three-dimensional and flowing transitions can also be found between the Life and Drive modules.
