BMW is best-selling luxury brand in the US in May 2014

BMW edged out Mercedes-Benz in the United States in May sales. BMW logged a 17-percent jump in May sales to 29,602 units while Mercedes posted a 7.7-percent rise to 26,617 deliveries. BMW’s gains were boosted by less expensive models and stylish crossovers.

In fact, its SUV and CUV sales surged 81 percent in the month to 5,723. Mercedes’ gains, meanwhile, were led by a 25-percent jump in deliveries of the E-class sedan and an 83-percent leap in the sales of its S-class.

Mercedes and BMW, as well as Audi have been offering less-expensive models in the US in a bid to capture new buyers with rising incomes while retaining more affluent customers. In the first five months of 2014, BMW logged a 12-percent jump in deliveries to 127,181 vehicles, around 2,000 units more than Mercedes’ 125,118 deliveries.

The figures, however, exclude Daimler cargo vans and Smart cars and Mini brand, since they aren’t luxury vehicles. Volkswagen AG’s Audi unit surged 25 percent to 16,601 deliveries in May, thanks to a 6-percent gain of its A4 sedan (3,123 units).

It also delivered 2,261 units deliveries of its entry-level A3. May 2014 marks Audi’s 41st consecutive sales record in US. In the first five months of 2014, Audi logged an 11-percent gain in deliveries to 67,482.

Lexus, on the other hand, posted a 21-percent surge in sales in the US to 26,921 in May. The gains were led by the entry-level Lexus IS that doubled its deliveries in the month to 4,403 units for the entry-level IS and by the RX SUV which sales surged 8.7 percent to 9,476. In the first five months of the year, Lexus saw its sales jump 19 percent to 115,171 units.
