The X models from BMW continue to have many of the brand’s well-known design features. However, in order to give them a unique look, this is combined with versatility, robustness, and a strong presence. Specifically for the X5, BMW gave this design language a more attractive and contemporary upgrade. This third-generation of the brand’s Sports Activity Vehicle has its proportions defined once again with the upright A-pillars, long wheelbase, and the short overhang in the front. Defining the proportions as well is the short distance between the instrument panel and the front axle.
BMW kidney grille now has a more muscular design and has been positioned within the fog lamps in the front and the triangle of the front end’s twin circular headlights. Its bumper meanwhile has X-shaped curved lines which make it immediately recognizable as part of the brand’s X model range. Talking about the kidney grille, it has been made more broad-set and now stretches to the headlight units.
As previously mentioned, the signature twin circular headlights are there. These extend to the side panels of the model. The light rings have been leveled off at the bottom portion with the top edge being overlapped with a LED accent light. Meanwhile the lights have been designed to have a more three-dimensional feel and have those sweeping chrome inserts. This helps highlight the sophisticated quality of the model. BMW said though that the front LED fog lamps are offered as an option.
Another feature that’s available as an option is the Adaptive LED Headlights which can be recognized by the horizontal light sources that are in the middle of the light rings. For the X5 M50d and the X5 xDrive50i variants, they have the xenon headlights equipped as a standard feature. Going back to the front apron, BMW positioned the side air intakes far to the vehicle’s outer edges.
This puts focus on the fact that the X5 has a more planted stance in addition to having a wide track. Through the strong underbody protection elements, it puts that added emphasis on this vehicle’s versatile and robust quality.
Further, these new models will mark the first time X models will have the Air Curtains, a feature that lowers drag. This feature is composed of vertical openings which help manage the inflow of air on the wheel arches. The openings result in a curtain of air just above the wheels after which they come out through the Air Breathers located on the side panels.
