Bmw to announce to official name of MegaCity Vehicle on February 21

Article by Christian A., on February 7, 2011

The arrival of BMW’s first entry into the green vehicle sector is a major deal and the industry is very excited. On Feb. 21, the name of the model that will give birth to the i range will be announced. Sources told Autonews that the new electric vehicle range from BMW would carry the i designation, with the models to be named in sequence, such as 1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9. BMW has yet to announce the official details of this model.

The first Megacity, the first production model in the world to merge an electric drive with a carbon fiber body, will be built on an aluminum chassis that will hold the batteries, electric motor and management system.

This platform is dubbed Life-Drive and it’s likely to be powered by the same electric drive train previewed in the ActiveE concept -- a synchronous electric motor that produces 170 bhp and a maximum torque of 250 Nm.

Just like what the MINI E had to go through, the Megacity will begin as a test vehicle, while BMW determines the best way to offer it to the masses. However, BMW’s plans don’t seem to favor either sale or long-term lease. [via autonews - sub. required]
