BMW has unveiled its BMW i8 Concept Spyder at the Beijing International Auto Show. The BMW i8 Concept Spyder presents the future technology that will soon be used on BMW’s electric and plug-in hybrid cars. The BMW i8 Concept Spyder carries the emblem for the eDrive technology, BMW’s future designation for the drive technology for all electric and plug-in hybrid cars from BMW i.
The BMW eDrive has all the components of the electric drivetrain, like the electric motor developed in-house by BMW, the lithium-ion battery, and the intelligent motor management system. The intelligent motor management system allows BMW eDrive cars to accelerate continually until they reach their top speed. The system permits the full torque of the electric motor to be readily available from the jumpstart.
BMW eDrive cars offer drivers with extreme agility without compromising driving pleasure. BMW assures that the eDrive cars’ lithium-ion battery cells and the intelligent motor management system offer significant increase in power and range. In the near future, all electric and plug-in vehicles from BMW i will be using the eDrive technology.
In developing the i8 Concept Spyder, BMW made use of the pioneering LifeDrive platform, the same one employed for the Coupe. This platform has a Life module that is composed of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, or CFRP, and thereby ensures that the concept car’s passenger cell is lightweight. The Drive module meanwhile, mainly composed of aluminum, combines all of the operation driving functions of the vehicle like the safety structure, chassis, and powertrain. In terms of proportions, the length of the i8 Concept Spyder is shorter compared to the Coupe version of the i8 Concept.
The combination of the unique paintwork on the exterior and the compact dimensions gives the concept car a dynamic feel even before the wheels itself turn. Its design has a number of eye-catching features like how the windowless doors swivel upward and the transparent glass panel placed at the rear section. Below the cover are two electric kickboards which have been stowed.
This helps with showcasing that fun factor that is present in mobility while highlighting even further the recreational draw. The BMW i8 Concept Spyder is also able to set new benchmarks with it comes to crash safety, structural rigidity, and weight minimization. This is due to the use of advanced materials which not only benefit the dynamic performance but also have an impact on the fuel economy and the range.
Despite the high-output hybrid drivetrain having that extra weight, it has zero impact on the concept car given the use of innovative materials mixed with the lightweight design. In addition, the LifeDrive architecture was not simply implemented in the i8 Concept Spyder but was carefully adjusted to the vehicle’s sports car quality. The axle module in the front is connected to the one in the rear by an “energy tunnel.”
This same tunnel is where the hybrid battery has been placed and this configuration allowed the engineering team to give the concept car a low center of gravity and with it that ideal balance. Going to the interior, the sporty feel is highlighted with the improved material and the color.
Similar to the Coupe as well, the i8 Concept Spyder is fitted with the eDrive, the brand’s very own high-performance plug-in hybrid. The eDrive is able to optimize the advantages of a combustion engine and electric motor. This results in dynamic capability and excellent efficiency.
