BMW M Performance Automobiles unveiled today the M550d xDrive Sedan and M550d xDrive Touring, two sporty models featuring a brand new 3.0-liter diesel engine, delivering 280 kW/381 hp and 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft), all of which the driver will find on tap as low down as 2,000 rpm. And yes, this is a tri-turbocharged engine!
The system comprises two relatively small turbochargers and one large turbo, which join forces precisely to deliver the amount of power required. The new engine can push the M550d xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds, while the Touring model hits 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.
Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h or 155 mph in both cases. Still, the engine offers a fuel consumption of just 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres (44.8 mpg imp) in the Sedan, while the Touring offers 6.4 l/100 km (44.1 mpg imp). CO2 emissions are 165 grams per kilometre for the BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and 169 g/km for the BMW M550d xDrive Touring.
This means that both morels already meet the requirements specified by the EU6 exhaust standard. As expected, the new Bmw models are tweaked by the BMW M Performance Automobiles and offer a standard eight-speed Sports automatic transmission with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel and is given model-specific settings.
In addition, the all-wheel-drive system follows a control strategy tailored to each model. Furthermore, both BMW M550d xDrive come with aerodynamically optimised body elements at the front and rear, Ferric Grey exterior mirrors and air intake bars, but also exclusive 20-inch light-alloy wheels which are available as an option. Regarding the price, the BMW M550d xDrive Sedan will be priced at 80,800 euros while the Touring version at 83,750 euros.
BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring use a chassis technology that is built on a front double-wishbone axle as well as the integral rear axle. The Touring model features air suspension that has automatic self-levelling happening at the rear axle. The spring, damper system, hydraulic steering and suspension are also made even better with fine tuning done exclusively for these models.
These modifications give both models a new interpretation of the signature handling characteristics that the M-series are known for. These include agility when undergoing both longitudinal and lateral acceleration, as well as the precision of the responses from the steering wheel.
Anti-roll bars and specialized rubber bearings enhance the bodyshell mounting of both the BMW M550d xDrive and the BMW M550d xDrive Touring models. Additionally, you have redesigned springs and dampers for tighter responses to dynamic forces.
The new models also have enhanced anti-roll control that helps you do safe turn-in regardless of the speed. The car enjoys linear buildup of lateral forces when it changes directions, making it very controllable.
What do all of these mean? It means the BMW M Performance models give you the same comfortable rides that you have come to expect from the BMW 5-Series when you are navigating bumpy roads. Overall, the car gets the M-specific set-up that is exclusive only for BMW M Performance Automobiles. These exclusive set ups include changes to the tuning of the anti-roll control and the electronically controlled dampers. What you get is a uniform M set up no matter what equipment options you choose or add.
You can also opt for the Adaptive Drive system or the Dynamic Damper Control system to enjoy the COMFORT+ mode on your Driving Experience Control switch. The BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring further features a braking system that has inner-vented discs. These discs measure 374 millimetres in diameter for the front axle, while similar discs at the back measure only 345 millimetres. You can also go with the standard 19-inch light-alloy wheels with the 245/40 R 19 tyres or you can opt for a slightly larger 20-inch wheels that has a variety of tyres to choose from.
The chassis for both the BMW M550d xDrive and the BMW M550d xDrive Touring utilizes technology mainly based on the front axle having a double-wishbone and an integral axle for the rear. Additionally, the Touring version also has at the rear axle an air suspension that allows for automatic self-leveling. By applying M-specific tuning, several features experienced the benefits; one example of which is the hydraulic steering which comes with the Servotronic function, spring and damper system, and suspension. With these enhancements, the M550d xDrive and the Touring version are able to deliver a new interpretation on the classic M handling qualities. In particular, the agility of the vehicle when under longitudinal and lateral acceleration, as well as how precise the response is when it comes to steering commands, is taken to a whole new level.
With regards to the braking system, one of the highlights is the inner-vented discs, the same one seen on the BMW 550i with the V8 petrol engine fitted to it. The discs measure 374 millimeters for the front axle while the one at the rear axle measures 345 millimeters. Equipped as standard are the light-alloy 19-inch M wheels that reveal a double-spoke design and that have been fitted with the 245/40 R 19 sized tires. Offered as an option and developed specifically for the M Performance Automobiles are the light-alloy 20-inch M wheels. Meanwhile, the bodyshell mountings have been optimized mainly due to the anti-roll bars and the special rubber bearings. To ensure even tighter standard responses relating to dynamic forces, the dampers and the springs have both been modified.
Further, with the anti-roll control being enhanced, immediate turn-in no matter what the speed may be is guaranteed. This is because even if the lateral forces build-up when there is a change in the direction, it can be controlled as the forces themselves are linear. These simply mean that the M Performance Automobiles can retain the comfort enhancing qualities of the 5-Series especially when leveling ruts and bumps on the road. The Adaptive Drive system and the Dynamic Damper Control both make it possible to use the switch of the Driving Experience Control to activate the COMFORT+ mode. There are other M-specific features of the M Performance Automobiles like the tuning of the anti-roll control and the modified electronically-controlled dampers.
As such, the end result is an overall set-up similar to the M no matter what equipment option is selected. Yet other features similar to the M set-up that can be found on the two models include the body’s aerodynamic qualities which give the xDrive and the M550d xDrive the dynamics that allow it to be controlled in a precise manner. Complementing the elegant yet sporty look is the designs on the front apron and the rear which have been airflow-optimized. Majority of the front is dominated by the air intakes that have been made larger.
