car2go opens its doors in Berlin

Article by Christian A., on April 30, 2012

Urban mobility reached a milestone on April 26 in Berlin as Daimler’s car2go subsidiary, which started the trend for fully flexible short-term car rentals, will launch its biggest rental fleet worldwide within the framework of a joint venture with the Europcar rental company. Berlin occupants can rent any of the 1,000 smart fortwo models in the new fleet at any time and they could drive over an area of about 250 km². All that’s needed to be accomplished is a one-time registration.

After using the smart, the customer can be returned to any public parking space within the operating area. Already, this new system is already in high demand in Berlin. So far, there have been about 2,000 pre-registrations submitted for car2go in Berlin. This launch coincides with the release of the first official car2go App for smartphones and the launch of an “Eco Score” feature for all car2go vehicles throughout the globe.

The Eco Score comes with an onboard touchscreen display that gives information to drivers with regards to the environmental compatibility of their driving style. Initially, car2go will be launched in Berlin with 1,000 smart fortwo “car2go edition” models with traditional drive systems. The vehicles have a stop-start feature, air conditioning, and a navigation system. What’s included in the car2go operating area are the commuter rail ring around Berlin, the city’s nearby suburbs, the centers of Spandau and Köpenick, and the densely populated areas Marzahn, Hellersdorf, Lichtenrade and Märkisches Viertel.

A one-time registration fee of 9.90 euros has to be paid. When renting a vehicle, the customers are charged a rate of 29 cents per minute that includes applicable taxes, insurance, fuel and parking costs, and the first 20 kilometers traveled. If the car2go is left parked in between, the rate drops to nine cents per parked minute. The discounted rates are offered for hourly and daily use. A one-hour car2go rental has a price of 12.90 euros while the daily rental fee (24 hours) is 39 euros. There’s a free early car2go registration until April 30 at the car2go shop located at Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 2 in Berlin’s Mitte district. A free 30-minute initial test drive is given to all new customers.
