Caterham is planning to offer an affordable sports car in 2015, according to its boss Anser Ali. This sports car will be available with at least three models, including a racing variant, Ali said during an interview with Car Magazine. He said that they have the financial support to offer a second Caterham to market, which will be positioned beside the Seven.
The new model comes with fixed doors and a roof. They intend to offer a coupe and convertible variants with the possibility of a third model.
Caterham will build this new model from the ground up. Ali said that the model will start “from scratch” when it comes to the platform technology and powertrain. He said that their plan is not to take the Seven and just make it “slightly bigger, slightly higher, slightly wider.” Caterham hopes that this new model will enable the automaker to increase sales by more than 500 units annually.
He is seeking to increase current sales by five times by attracting customers in new markets. Caterham is looking at the U.S. market but it is relying mostly on the Chinese market to increase sales. There aren’t many known details about this new model.
However, Caterham has revealed that it anticipates that this new model’s weight is lower than 2,200 lbs. We don’t know much about its engine but Ford’s units are a possibility since those were used in the Seven.
Caterham Cars revealed that while the Sevens lineup is already iconic on its own, its highly celebrated Supersport will get a new sibling with the Caterham Supersport R which is equipped with a 2.0-liter engine allowing for output at 180 hp as well as dynamics that are suited for the racing circuit. While the Supersport has the 1.6-liter engine, the Caterham Supersport R has the Ford Duratec 2-liter engine.
This engine has long shown that it performs well on the track as well as being durable. This was because of the fact that developing the engine took three years at the brand’s R300 race championship.
Though the new model does have many of the features seen in the Supersport, there are a number of circuit-oriented performance features included. To make sure that performance is increased, the new model is equipped with a larger engine and then paired to the 5-speed gearbox. The engine itself has been mounted to the front and with the help of a limited-slip differential, improves the performance that much further.
Aside from the reveal of the new model, the brand has disclosed that it will be starting a new joint venture, which is actually an engineering partnership with Renault. The goal is to make new vehicles which are sports cars that can be driven on a daily basis but continue to have the accessible fun principle the brand is known for.
With the new model, the brand hopes to show that it remains committed to developing the iconic Seven as it has been in the engineering field for almost 40 years now. According to Graham Macdonald, Chief Executive Officer of Caterham Car, as driving enthusiasts have long noticed the Supersports formula, the brand is more than confident to say that by having a R model to the range, there is a possibility that Caterham can use the success of the original model.
Macdonald admitted that there is no doubt the performance is excellent. However when paired with the suspension specification’s accessibility, the base model is able to operate not only on the track but even on the road. Additionally, the new model is satisfying, fun, and well-balanced when it comes to the driving experience. The Caterham Supersport R is being priced at £24,995, which already includes tax.
This is however for the self-build platform as the fully-built version will cost about £27,995. The new model is also able to take advantage of the mid-range punch and allows for a 25% increase in power not only for the Supersport, a good figure as when compared to the R300 road car, it boasts an extra 5 bhp.
