Chevrolet Camaro overtakes Ford Mustang in the muscle car sales race

Article by Christian A., on April 18, 2011

The race for top muscle car has always been tight but for the first quarter of 2011, the clear winner is Chevrolet Camaro. The Camaro only debuted a year ago but already it has outsold rival – the Ford Mustang. The Detroit Free Press said that Camaro sold 19,972 units while only 15,419 units of the Mustang had been sold.

The Dodge Challenger is at third place with 9,742 units sold. John Fitzpatrick, marketing manager for Chevrolet performance cars, said that Camaro outsells Mustang because it has a “very fresh model” in the market.

He said that what customers see when they’re considering a Camaro is that it has a unique look as well as improved efficiency. The total number of sold Camaros excludes several Chevrolet Camaro Convertibles that went on sale in February.

However, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be available on the market starting next year. Ford’s total sales include the Mustang Convertible and the Shelby GT500. This emphasizes all the more the superiority of the Camaro over the Mustang. In 2010, Camaro was able to outsell the Mustang for the first time ever since 1985. It seems likely that Chevrolet Camaro will prosper further. In 2010, Ford outsold Mustang for the first time since 1985.

By being able to combine the use of advanced technology, performance, and even excellent appearance, the Camaro is able to meet what customers demand from a 21st century sports coupe while being able to continue honoring its heritage.

General Motors vice president and Chevrolet general manager shared that the latest incarnation of the Camaro is able to deliver an advanced and modern package when it comes to comfort, technology and performance. It is not just a personal car that is aimed at a generation of fans, both young and old, he added. He explained that it is also a car that honors the heritage of the Chevrolet Camaro but with a more modern design.

This Camaro symbolizes the global vehicle development of the brand and its design process. It was also created using GM’s newest worldwide rear-wheel-drive passenger car platform. While the original design concept was done in the U.S., the engineering was done by teams coming from the U.S. and Australia. Validation was done on roads around the world with the assembly being managed by none other than the brand’s award winning facility located in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

The design remains to be similar to its original concept and thus this Chevrolet Camaro honors its proud heritage based on the first-generation Camaro, the same ones manufactured from 1967 until 1969. In terms of proportions, this two-door sports coupe has a wheelbase that measures 112.3 inches (2,852 mm). Total length is 190.4 inches (4,836 mm) while the width is at 75.5 inches (1,918 mm) and height is 54.2 inches (1,376 mm).

Since the short deck and the long hood have been pushed to its muscular fender’s far corners, this results to a 67-degree rake windshield. This helps with its aerodynamic performance leading to the V-6 models having a coefficient of drag (Cd) at 0.37. For the V-8 powered SS model meanwhile, the Cd is 0.35. During the design process, extra attention was given to the openings of its wheel arch to ensure that the relationship of the bottom of the fender and the top of the tire remain consistent regardless of the model. This is true even if it is equipped with the standard 18-inch wheels or the optional 19-inch wheels or even the 20-inch one.

All of the models will also have in its nose the standard “V” design motif placed on the aluminum hood. This feature has the power dome, measuring 2.5 inches (63.5 mm). These elements are reminiscent of the Chevrolet Camaro models and their top performance.

For the SS models meanwhile, the lower air intake is now larger while a simulated air intake has been placed on the upper front fascia. For the top, the designers took inspiration from the Corvette and then sculpted twin cockpits through the roof resulting in the car getting that unique Chevrolet look. When looked at from the outside, it is impossible to see the B-pillar; thus giving it that hardtop coupe appearance.

The B-pillar itself was designed to help with the car’s structural rigidity. As a way to make sure that quality is retained during the manufacturing process, a one-piece body stamping method was used as this gives the overall side a cleaner appearance since it is free from plastic appliqués, gaps, or seams. There is also the “Gills” that have been placed on the front of its rear quarter panel which evokes the styling cues of the Chevrolet Camaro.

For the exterior, the brand is offering a choice of ten colors which include Aqua Blue Metallic, Black, Cyber Gray Metallic, Imperial Blue Metallic, Inferno Orange Metallic, Victory Red, Rally Yellow, Red Jewel Tintcoat, Silver Ice Metallic, and White. For the LT and the SS models, an RS appearance package is offered. This package has HID headlamps that have halo rings integrated to it, specific taillamps, and the 20-inch wheels that come with a Midnight Silver finish. For the LT, it will also have a rear spoiler.
