Citroën expands compact vehicle selection with the C-Zero

Citroën is expanding its compact vehicle range with C-Zero, a car that is the 100% electric solution with zero CO2 emissions, zero fuel consumption, and zero noise. Having a compact dimension, fast charge, and enough range for daily travels, the C-Zero was designed to make mobility in the city easier. In addition to all these features, it also offers silence that allows both the driver and passengers to forget urban noise.

The C-Zero is indeed a mix of creativity and technology that is able to meet the challenges of tomorrow today. With the experience to be the market leader in its segment, Citroën expects to grow even further and has manufactured almost 6,000 electric cars. The C-Zero was developed in partnership with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and was launched towards the end of 2010. This is Citroën’s second electric car after the Berlingo First Electric which was developed through collaboration with Venturi.

These two models are eligible for a government bonus in France for as much as 5,000 euros. Being foremost as an environmental carmaker, Citroën has a long standing policy of reducing not just fuel consumption but the emission of greenhouse gases as well.

The C-Zero is a good addition to what is already a wide range of environment-friendly products from Citroën. The C-Zero is made possible through a permanent magnet synchronous motor capable of giving 47 kW of power with 3,000 to 6,000 of rpm. The motor allows for top torque of 180 Nm from 2,000 rpm. The power from the motor is transmitted through the single-speed reduction gear to the back axle.

A 330-volt lithium-ion battery system that has 88 50-Ah cells and mounted in the middle of the car powers the motor. The use of lithium-ion ensures that the weight of the battery is kept low and since it is resistant to partial charges, the life of the battery is increased as well. Recharging the battery of the C-Zero is very easy since all that needs to be done is to plug the cord car’s supply cord to a 220-volt socket.

A complete recharge takes about six 6 hours though it is possible to reach an 80% charge in half an hour by plugging it through an external station that has a 125 a single-phase current. Once the motor has been completely charged, the C-Zero is easy to use as well. All a driver needs to do is put the key in the ignition and then turn it. A beep sound then tells the driver that the car is now running. This being an electric car, a battery charge indicator replaces the fuel gauge found in traditional cars.

Though it appears that the C-Zero has a short range, this is advantageous considering that driving in urban areas averages less than 40 km on a weekly basis with 70% of full trips just going below 30 km. The C-Zero is capable of meetings the needs of both private customers and almost all types of companies, from government offices to company with fleets of cars.

Citroën’s new offering has a 166-liter boot and due to a 2.55-meter wheelbase, has 4 seats. It also has a wide selection of comfort and safety equipment. Finally, the C-Zero has power steering, power windows, air conditioning, six airbags, ABS, ESP, TCS, and an autonomous telematics box to be used in emergency situations.

A 100% electric vehicle
The CITROËN C-ZERO is a full-electric vehicle powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 47kW or 64bhp EEC from 3,000 to 6,000rpm. Maximum torque of 180Nm is available from 0 to 2,000rpm. Power is transmitted to the rear axle via a single-speed reduction gear.

The motor is powered by a latest-generation 330-volt lithium-ion battery system comprising 88 50Ah cells (for onboard energy of 16kWh), mounted in the centre of the vehicle. Lithium-ion technology keeps battery weight down compared with conventional technology, while offering equivalent performance. It is also resistant to partial re-charges, which have no impact on battery longevity.

Easy to charge, easy to use
Re-charging the C-ZERO's batteries could not be simpler. Owners plug the supply cord into a 220-volt socket. A complete charge takes six hours, while an 80% charge is possible in just 30 minutes using an external station with a single-phase current of 125A at 400V, for power of up to 50kW.

Using the car is equally simple. When the driver turns the ignition key, a beep confirms that the car is running. CITROËN C-ZERO drives like a regular car with an automatic gearbox. The traditional fuel gauge is replaced by a battery charge indicator.

The CITROËN C-ZERO is perfectly adapted to the needs of all kinds of users - including public sector operators, local authorities, smaller businesses and company fleets - and also to those of private customers looking for a car with exceptionally low running costs.

With four real seats - thanks to a 2.55m wheelbase - and a 166 litre boot, the C-ZERO is impressively quiet to drive and boasts a plethora of comfort and safety equipment. Original-fit features include power steering, ABS, traction control, ESP, electric windows, six airbags and air conditioning.

A City Car At Ease On The Open Road
The C-ZERO’s compact exterior dimensions - 3.48m long - and a 9m turning circle, make it a cinch to nip in and out of city traffic. And with a top speed of 130kph (80mph), acceleration from 0-100kph (0-62mph) in 15 seconds and 60-90kph (37-56mph) in 6 seconds, along with a range of around 130km (80miles), over a standard combined cycle, it is also fully at ease out on the open road.
