Cobra iRadar System: camera detection technology with the use of an iPhone

Article by Christian A., on October 15, 2010

Cobra recently launched the iRadar, a revolutionary detection system that combines radar/laser gun and speed/red light camera detection technology with the use of an iPhone. This new system consists of a Cobra radar detector and the Cobra iRadar App for iPhone. To connect the iPhone to the detector, the iRadar uses a Bluetooth wireless technology.

The detector's settings are controlled via the iPhone Multi-Touch display. Cobra iRadar system is able to detect all radar and laser guns on the market and it gives a 360 degree protection. When not hooked up to the app, the unit can also function as a standalone detector.

In addition, the app has Cobra’s AURA Camera and Driving Hazard Database. This means that drivers can receive alerts for speed and red light camera locations as well as for other driving hazards.

With this app, the drivers can examine past alert locations on a map, mark user locations, and look at their speed, compass heading and car battery voltage.

With the revolutionary Cobra iRadar Detection System on their vehicles, drivers can now make use of the GPS technology found in the Apple iPhone mobile device to find crucial information that can aid them in decision-making when driving.

These information included alerts for cameras monitoring speed and red light violations. The iRadar app also informs drivers about possible hazards along their driving routes, through information uploaded at the AURA Camera and Driving Hazard database.

The database combined with the iPhone’s GPS functionalities in order to bring updated and verified information to drivers. Sally Washlow, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Cobra Electronics, said that the new iRadar app provides a way for drivers to get clear and accurate information on the situation that they are likely to drive into.

Washlow expressed confidence that the new system will become a “new standard” in the detection market. The iRadar Detection System debuted with an MSRP of $169.95. The app could be bought at the Cobra official website, or from retailers nationwide.

The Cobra iRadar detector unit also works as a standalone detector when not paired to the app, ensuring that it is in radar/laser gun detection mode at all times.

The Cobra iRadar App is the control center for the iRadar Detection System. Using the Bluetooth wireless technology in iPhone, drivers can control all the settings of the iRadar detector including which alert notifications it will provide and the audio volume at which they will be provided. In addition, the app allows drivers to view past alert locations on a map, mark user locations, and view their speed, compass heading and car battery voltage.

The Cobra iRadar App includes at no cost Cobra's exclusive AURA™ Camera and Driving Hazard Database, which enables drivers to receive alerts for speed and red light camera locations as well as other driving hazards.
