Exclusive: Ferrari 458 Speciale Spider will be shown during a private event at Pebble Beach

Article by Christian A., on August 5, 2014

[UPDATE: The Ferrari 458 Speciale Spider was unveiled last weekend, read more detaild about the new vehicle here! ] - Back in June, we revealed you the fact that Ferrari is working on the 458 Speciale Spider, an open-top sports car based on the hardcore version of the 458 Italia. Our sources told us that the vehicle is currently in the works and some dealers are already taking orders for the new vehicle. Today, one of our sources based in Maranello, contacted us as it had some updates regarding the new sports car.

It appears that Ferrari will show the new vehicle at a private event during the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. If you remember, back in 2010, Ferrari did the same thing with the SA Aperta, an open-top version of the 599 GTB Fiorano, which was produced in a limited edition of just 80 units.

We also expect the 458 Speciale Spider to be offered in a limited edition due to the fact that Ferrari decided to offer a sneak preview to its most important clients.

As you may know already, Ferrari also offered the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M in a limited edition of 499 units and it was their way to celebrate the 16th Formula 1 Constructor Championship title.

We expect the new 458 Speciale Spider to use the same 4.5-liter V8 engine found on the coupe version, capable to deliver 605 hp at 9,000 rpm and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque at 6,000 rpm.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.0 seconds, to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 9.1 seconds, while top speed is in excess of 320 km/h or 200 mph.

We expect the spider version to be as fast as the coupe. If you remember, when Ferrari introduced the Scuderia Spider 16M back in 2008, it was its fastest open-top sports car and we expect the new 458 Speciale Spider to get the same title, at least until the LaFerrari Spider arrives.

Although we do expect to see the 458 Speciale Spider at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, there is still no official word about that. Still, a bunch of people will definitely see the new vehicle during the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance weekend, which will be held on 16-17 of August.

The dynamic attributes of the new Ferrari 458 Speciale ensure optimal driving emotions in any situation, thereby enabling drivers to easily reach and even surpass their own boundaries and enjoy a thrilling driving experience even at lower speeds.

Ferrari developed the new 458 Speciale to offer a great degree of nimbleness and responsiveness, which is apparent when it is driven on twisty roads. Thanks to new technical features, the 458 Speciale was able to improve lap times over single laps several times over, thereby offering new levels of driving pleasure for the person behind the wheel.

Ferrari’s so-called Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) system is making its debut on the new Ferrari 458 Speciale, offering effortless control on the limit for greater driver enjoyment. This sophisticated new software could compute the vehicle’s yaw angle, lateral acceleration as well as steering wheel angle and speed while instantaneously analyzing its side slip angle and comparing it with reference data. SSC is designed to deliver a smoother and more controllable oversteer as well as to optimize both torque management (through F1-Trac traction control) and differential torque distribution between the two driven wheels (via the E-Diff electronic differential).
