Article by Christian A., on August 29, 2010

Mercedes-Benz has delivered the very first Mercedes-Benz GLK 320 CDI sports utility vehicle to its new owner. Handing over the keys to PR consultant Magdalena Dietz is Peter Schabert, manager of Mercedes' Bremen plant.

The handover and the delivery took place at the plant's Customer Center. During the handover ceremony, Schabert described the new GLK as Mercedes' most important new model this year. He noted that the GLK is the premium brand's first compact SUV and the first Mercedes SUV made in Bremen.

He added that as the Bremen plant's manager, he is delighted to personally hand over the first GLK to its owner. He remarked that Dietz will be impressed by the GLK's looks, safety and comfort, as well as its on- and off-the-road performance.

On the other hand, Dietz – also an owner of the public relations agency "wortsuchttext" along with her husband -- is also as excited to take delivery of the new Mercedes GLK 320 CDI in metallic tenorite gray.

She remarked that the new GLK is a perfect match for their agency because of its modern character and the way it stands out from its rival SUVs.

Dietz noted that as the first GLK customer, she was very pleased to receive their new SUV from the Bremen plant's manager. She added that after weeks of anticipation, she can't wait to drive her new Mercedes GLK SUV.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class is now here to conquer the compact SUV segment with its all-rounder practicality and charming compact body form. Moreover, the new GLK offers a fusion of elements that were previously regarded as opposites.

For instance, its Agility Control suspension combines excellent handling dynamics, superb ride comfort as well as exceptional driving safety. Along with the latest electronic control systems, the variable 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system helps the GLK deliver accomplished on-road performance as well as superior off-road suitability – a combination that gives the compact SUV its massive appeal. Although the new GLK-Class may be one of the carmaker’s more road-oriented SUVs, the letter "G" in its model name has a due place.

While the four- and six-cylinder engines available for the new GLK-Class offer new levels of performance, they also deliver greater higher degree of efficiency. For instance, the new entry-level four-cylinder diesel engine in the BlueEFFICIENCY model of the GLK 220 CDI could deliver 125 kW (170 hp) while consuming only 6.9 liters of diesel per 100 km.

On the other hand, the new Mercedes GLK-Class features highly robust body that allows for an innovative passive-safety setup, high degree of interior comfort, low noise levels as well as high value retention. In addition, the new GLK features commendable appointments and appealing equipment packages – making the compact SUV stand out from its mass-produced rivals. It also debuts on the compact SUV segment a number of state-of-the-art features like the PRE-SAFE safety concept and the Intelligent Light System (ILS).

Even at a glance, the new Mercedes GLK-Class exudes a poise and confidence that announces its target to dominate the compact premium SUV segment. Considered as the most sophisticated in its segment, the displays of the GLK-Class are similar to that of the G-Class.

Design chief Peter Pfeiffer noted the G-Class is a style icon that has been a benchmark in SUV design in the past three decades. He remarked that by combining this concept of the G-Class and the latest Mercedes design idiom lends the GLK a genuine character.

First Mercedes-Benz GLK Handed Over to Customer

The first Mercedes-Benz GLK after the market launch is handed over by plant manager Peter Schabert in the Bremen Customer Center.

Peter Schabert: “The GLK is our most important new model this year, so I am particularly delighted to personally hand over the first GLK to its owner.”

Bremen – Magdalena Dietz, 29, entrepreneur and PR consultant, today received the key to her new Mercedes-Benz GLK from Bremen plant manager Peter Schabert. Ms. Dietz is the first customer to take delivery of a vehicle of the entirely new GLK-Class following its market launch. The handover - of a GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC in metallic tenorite gray with numerous optional equipment features - took place in the Customer Center of the Bremen plant.

“The GLK is our most important new model this year,” said plant manager Peter Schabert. “It is the first compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) from Mercedes-Benz and the first Mercedes-Benz SUV ‘Made in Bremen’, so I am particularly delighted to personally hand over the first GLK to its owner. I am sure she will be impressed by its unmistakable look, outstanding performance - on and off the road - and its safety and comfort.”

Ms. Dietz and her husband Christian live in the city of Düren near Aachen and are the owners of the public relations agency “wortsuchttext.” “The GLK is simply a perfect match for our agency: it has a modern character and stands out clearly from its competitors,” said Ms. Dietz. “As the first GLK customer following the market launch, I am very pleased to get our GLK handed over personally in its birthplace by the plant manager himself - and now, after weeks of anticipation, I can’t wait to take the vehicle out for a spin for the first time.”

Ms. Dietz’ family also have been loyal Mercedes-Benz customers for many years: family members have been E-Class and C-Class drivers in the past and currently drive an M-Class. “Combining a visit to the Customer Center with a tour of the adjacent Mercedes-Benz plant is certainly the most enjoyable way to accept delivery of a new Mercedes-Benz. In the past we have picked up our vehicles at the Sindelfingen and Bremen plants,” said Ms. Dietz.

The new GLK-Class

The GLK is the fifth production series of the successful Mercedes-Benz family of SUVs, which also includes the G-Class, GL-Class, M-Class, and R-Class. With the addition of the GLK, the premium segment’s most diverse line-up of SUVs is now enhanced by a compact vehicle.

Even before its official market launch the GLK-Class had generated a lot of interest among customers: worldwide, 25,000 orders were placed for the GLK between its official release for sale on June 30th and the end of September.

Mercedes-Benz offers four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines for the GLK that are powerful as well as economical. The brand will also begin offering a BlueEFFICIENCY model in the spring of 2009 - the GLK 220 CDI featuring a new four-cylinder diesel engine. The GLK-Class features pioneering passive safety systems, excellent interior comfort and a low noise level, and excellent value retention. For the first time in this market segment, Mercedes-Benz is also making available state-of-the-art systems such as the PRE-SAFE® safety package and the ILS intelligent light system.
