Ford has finally confirmed that the Ford Mustang is the best-selling sports coupe in 2015 worldwide following the vehicle’s extreme makeover in 2013. It is the only sports car that reached sales of more than 100,000 units around the world in a year. Specifically, 141,000 Ford Mustang models were sold in 2015, 19,000 of which went abroad. About 110,000 hardtops and about 30,000 drop-tops comprise the massive sales figure.
While the Ford Mustang has always been an American favorite for years, the latest production model was the first one to be offered in 140 countries. It is also the first version to be available in right-hand-drive. Further improving the vehicle is the EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder system, which also boosts the car’s sales abroad.
For the carmaker, this is just the tip of the iceberg since the Ford Mustang’s entry to the international market just began. A total of 4,300 units have already been shipped to Europe and 12,000 orders are still waiting to be fulfilled in the region. Moreover, in Australia, the Ford Mustang is already considered sold out through 2017. 2,000 more units will be shipped in the region later this year.
In the UK, the car industry began selling the Ford Mustang in the fourth quarter. So far, 3,500 models have already been sold, the first 1,000 of which have been delivered last month.
Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle said that the US has enjoyed foreign sports coupe models for years so now is the perfect time for the US market to return the favor to the rest of the world. Car buyers are also digging the 5.0-liter V8 engine, which comes as no surprise. Merkle said that most consumers worldwide— especially in Australia and New Zealand— actually prefer the V8 model despite high fuel prices.
This 2016, the Ford Mustang continues to be at the top of the sports coupe market. Last month, it already outsold the Audi TT and the Porsche 911 in Germany, according to German Federal Motor Transport Authority. Moreover, it was also considered as the best selling sports car in France last month, with 339 units sold in the first quarter. The same goes for the US market, with 12,563 units sold for the month. According to US data, the Ford Mustang outsold the combined sales of Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger.
During the fourth quarter, the Ford Mustang was the best selling sports car in China. According to data, the world’s second largest economy prefers the EcoBoost versions. In 2015, the Ford Mustang was also the best selling sports car in Mexico as sales surged 176% year-over-year.
