Ford unveiled today the 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition, a new version of its popular pickup truck that adds new touches to Raptor's existing Luxury Package such as a Ruby Red Metallic exterior color and box-side graphics. The interior was not forgotten and the 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition features Brick Red seat bolsters with black inserts and cloth honeycomb highlights, a console top finish panel and center stack and new door panel appliqué accents.
Moreover, the Raptor Special Edition is also available in Tuxedo Black Metallic. The 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition will go on sale this fall and will be powered by the same 6.2-liter V8 engine producing best-in-class 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque, bolted to an electronic six-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode and SelectShift Automatic functionality.
The 4WD system features electronic shift-on-the-fly capability for the transfer case. The front axle features a Torsen differential with 4.10 to 1 gearing. The rear axle is also 4.10 to 1, with an electronic-locking differential.
Brian Wolfe, Ford Racing Technology director, remarked that carmaker’s commitment to using racing as a test grounds for new technologies now covers off-road events through the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R. He quipped that having the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R compete in the Baja 1000 is the ultimate off-road test, allowing Ford to assess how well the F-150 SVT Raptor could hold up under the most distinct and extreme conditions.
As it is, the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R employs stock components of F-150 SVT Raptor like its transmission, axles and brakes. The F-150 SVT Raptor R also employs the same fully boxed frame found in the base F-150. However, the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R is powered by specially calibrated 6.2-liter V-8 engine that provides 500 horsepower of output.
Furthermore, the vaunted off-road capability of the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor has been augmented by a couple of enhancements that allow it to tackle long-distance off-road endurance events. Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer, commented that the racing version of the F-150 SVT Raptor now boasts of more suspension travel, better approach and departure angles as well as more horsepower and more ground clearance.
He added that the F-150 SVT Raptor R now features full racing specification seats and safety cage and harnesses. He commenced that while an average customer may not race a truck in the Baja 1000, the things that would occur in the event could keep repeating over the life of a vehicle.
Hameedi added that knowing the F-150 SVT Raptor R could endure and compete in the Baja 1000 is important to off-road enthusiasts. While the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R emulates the 'Built Ford Tough' motto with its capability and toughness, it also demonstrates the level of high-performance vehicles from SVT.
Hameedi called the F-150 SVT Raptor R as a natural SVT extension of the F-150 SVT Raptor, just as the Cobra R was to an SVT Cobra or a Mustang FR500C was to a Mustang GT. Interestingly, the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R being prepped for the Baja 1000 is also a test bed for the development of new off-road performance parts that could be availed at Ford Racing.
