Ford has unveiled the European production version of the all-new EcoSport sports utility vehicle at the ongoing Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The EcoSport SUV will be equipped with Ford SYNC voice-activated in-car connectivity system and SYNC Emergency Assistance. The EcoSport SUV will also be one of the first Ford models in Europe to offer Ford SYNC AppLink, which allows drivers to voice-control smartphone apps.
The EcoSport will be the second SUV to be rolled out in the carmaker’s expanding European range when it was made available by the end of 2013, behind the Ford Kuga.
The EcoSport is built on Ford’s global small car platform, enabling it to deliver the agility and fuel efficiency of a small family car while exhibiting the flexibility, roominess and high driving position attributes of an SUV. Ford SYNC with Emergency Assistance directly links the driver and passengers to local emergency services operators after an accident, in the correct language for the region using information from the vehicle’s on-board GPS unit.
Ford SYNC with Emergency Assistance directly links the driver and passengers to a mobile network to determine accident location and select the appropriate language for delivering an introductory message. The EcoSport will be available in three power source options – a 125 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, a 110 PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, or a 90 PS 1.5-litre diesel engine.
The EcoSport’s unique front grille, short bonnet and raked front pillars provide a sporty and contemporary feel, while angular headlamps boost its modern styling. The EcoSport will also offer a package of driver assistance technologies like the Electronic Stability Program and Hill Launch Assist. Aside from the EcoSport, Ford will also introduce to Europe the next generation Ford Edge, a larger and more premium utility vehicle that has been popular in the US and other countries.
The new EcoSport from Ford officially made its debut during the 2012 Auto China held in Beijing. This latest offering has that confident stance while being able to deliver on maneuverability, agility, and fuel efficiency. It offers a driving position that is higher compared to other models with a strong character. Add in a compact footprint and you get a sports utility vehicle that is more than perfect to be driven in an urban setting, whether for play or for work.
With the plan to put up a facility in China to manufacture this fuel-efficient and compact SUV, the implication is that the EcoSport will try to present itself as an alternative vehicle to the small car. Inside the EcoSport is a different powertrain solution, one of which is the brand’s very own and highly-advanced engine which is the EcoBoost 1.0-liter engine.
Through this engine, Ford hopes that the EcoSport will be able to set new standards as it relates to fuel efficiency. In addition to performance, there are other features inside this new model that are aimed at assisting the driver. One of this is the SYNC driver connect system that comes with voice control. The interior in particular not only shows excellent craftsmanship but offers a large space and delivers on comfort.
There are other advanced features inside that help maximize refinement and quietness. That the new EcoSport was developed to exhibit remarkable fuel economy can be seen in the more modern design that is just as aerodynamic as it is attractive. The various features, smart technologies, and the level of craftsmanship are bound to surprise many customers as it is more than what they typically expect from models in this segment.
In addition to the new facility to be opened in Chongqing, China, Ford has facilities as well in South America, particularly in Camaçari, Brazil. The brand also has manufacturing plants located in Rayong, Thailand, and another in Chennai, India. Aside from the news of the facility to be built in China, Ford revealed as well that it will be releasing a production version of the new EcoSport.
This announcement regarding the production model came shortly after this same model was initially previewed during the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo held in January of the same year. It was previewed as well in Brazil as the EcoSport itself was made through a global development team. Overall, the new EcoSport is expected to be on sale in an estimated 100 markets around the world.
