Ford Motor Co. has appointed Joel Piaskowski as director of exterior design for The Americas, according to Ford spokesman Alan Hall. Piaskowski, who has designed for Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz brands, will start working for Ford on Oct. 1.
Piaskowski, 41, will fill the position vacated in May 2009 when Moray Callum became the executive director of design for The Americas.
Piaskowski will be reporting to Callum. From late 2008 until March 2010, Piaskowski was the head of the Advanced Design studio for Mercedes-Benz in Irvine, Calif. He also previously served as the director of North American Design Studios at the Hyundai Kia America Technical Center in Irvine.
He is credited for leading major projects such as the Hyundai Genesis sedan and coupe, which enabled Hyundai to move into higher-end products.
His other projects include the 2011 Hyundai Sonata exterior and the concept for the 2010 Hyundai Tucson. But as to where Piaskowski began his career – it was with General Motors, where he had the opportunity to work in design studios throughout the globe. [via autonews - sub. required]
