GM delays the 2016 Cadillac ELR due to system integration difficulties

Cadillac’s ELR was not quite a best seller and back in May we reported that GM will provide a $5,000 incentive to dealers who would offer test drives for the plug-in hybrid based on the Chevrolet Volt. Although many of you folks were expecting the next-generation ELR as a 2016MY, it appears that the vehicle’s debut was delayed due to system integration difficulties.

GM insiders said that the next-gen ELR will be a highly autonomous vehicle and engineers will need more tie in order to refine the features offered by the plug-in hybrid. Earlier this year, General Motors said that the Super-Cruise feature will be featured in its upcoming vehicles and we have to admit that it is possible to see it on the new ELR.

The 2014 Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid is currently priced at $75,995, including destination charge. Still, thanks to the $7,500 federal tax credit, the ELR starts t $68,495. Just like the Chevrolet Volt, the Cadillac ELR uses an electric motor that powers the front wheels, delivering 157 hp in EV mode and 181 hp in extended-range mode.

In addition, the vehicle features a 1.4-liter internal-combustion four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 84 hp. The total output delivered by the hybrid system is 207 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. ELR needs 8.2 seconds to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) when using the petrol engine and 9.1 seconds when using the electricity from the batteries.

Cadillac ELR has a strong, forward-slanting silhouette that presents a new, advanced theme and dimension to Cadillac's design development. It remains almost unaltered from its inspiration of the 2009 Converj concept. The total shape gets reinforcement from a pronounced, extensive body outline emphasised by 20” wheels thrusted to the body’s edges.

The ELR stands for a new aspect of Art & Science, Cadillac’s guiding values. Cadillac's genes are innovative, with an intense and provoking design. ELR provides this in a luxurious coupe that stands apart from major global luxury brands.

Erect head and tail light components fashion Cadillac's signature for the ELR, night or day and from the front or back – a tradition for the brand since 1948.

Aerodynamics take a vital design role as airflow management helps the vehicle glide through the air with minimum drag. A flushed front fascia and grille, which have active shutters behind the opening of the grille, along with narrowing fascia corners, allow air to flow effortlessly around the vehicle, reducing drag. In the back, acute edges and a meticulously fashioned spoiler also control the air. A forceful rake on the windscreen and back glass assists in reducing drag and turbulence, contributing to the ELR's 0.305 drag coefficient.

Added exterior features include:

• Door handles concealed in recesses located behind the doors

• The charge port is situated on the front fender on the driver's side

• Side mirror lights pulse green as the battery charges and darken when charging is done

Exterior colours are Black Raven, Radiant Silver Metallic, Graphite Metallic, and Crystal Red.

Interior features

Luxury elements, great dimensions, and a continuous and aerodynamic cockpit integrating the latest tech interface were the highest priorities for the ELR interior designers. A flowing feature outline from the instrument panel to the doors through to the back glass produces comprehensive and congruent cockpit surroundings.
