Hyundai unveiled as well as demonstrated the new Blue Link smartwatch app at Pepcom’s Digital Experience (Jan. 5) and at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (Jan. 6 to 9, 2015). Hyundai’s Blue Link platform gives wearers quick access to remote start and service information using smartwatches and smartphones.
Hyundai collaborated with Station Digital Media to develop the Blue Link smartwatch app. Barry Ratzlaff, executive director for customer connect and service business development at Hyundai Motor America, remarked that the new smartwatch app expands the carmaker’s exploration into “how wearable technology and Blue Link fit into a customer’s lifestyle.”
He added that a connection between driver and the car – using a smartwatch and voice recognition -- was previously something seen only in science fiction movies. To use the app, the wearer just need to taps an icon or uses voice commands to execute remote functions.
Using the Blue Link smartwatch app, provides Hyundai vehicle owners the ability to remote start, lock and unlock doors and even locate their vehicles in a parking lot. By pushing a mic icon on the watch, a driver can activate the voice function and then give commands like “Start my car,” “Lock my car” or “Find my car.”
To be able to use the Blue Link smartwatch app, it should be paired via Bluetooth to an owner’s smartphone installed with the Blue Link mobile app. Once paired, a user can executive remote functions from almost anywhere in the United States -- as long as his or her smartphone has a Bluetooth and cellular or Internet connection.
The Blue Link smartwatch app works with first and next generation Hyundai models equipped with Blue Link. Android Wear users can download the Blue Link smartwatch app from Google Play for free.
Four years ago at the 2011 CES, Hyundai unveiled its Blue Link telematics platform. At that time, the South Korean carmaker promised over 30 different features, including remote door-lock/unlock capabilities, a maintenance reminder that helps drivers identify and schedule service as well as an "eco-coach" that improves efficient driving, restaurant ratings. Features offered by the BlueLink system also include remote start, geofencing, and vehicle slowdown.
Barry Ratzlaff, director of customer satisfaction and service business development at Hyundai Motor America, called the Blue Link as a complete package that combines safety, service and infotainment. He disclosed that Hyundai studied the reliance of drivers on smart phones and navigation systems as a connection to the outside world. He remarked that Blue Link allows this seamless connectivity to be realized through technologies such as voice text messaging, turn-by-turn navigation, POI web search download as well as monthly vehicle reporting.
