Is this world’s greatest drag race, or what?

Article by Christian A., on August 29, 2012

Motor Trend had recently put on the World’s Greatest Drag Race, which had a price tag of more than $1.1 million. Motor Trend has always been known for its high-horsepower drag races. For this year, it got nine Best Driver’s Car contenders with 4730hp. In 2011, the World’s Greatest Drag Race got 11 high-performance cars at the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro to determine which car could go the fastest in a straight line.

This year, Motor Trend’s nine 2012 Best Driver’s Car contenders gathered on the same airfield in its attempt to gain YouTube fame. The participants in the World’s Greatest Drag Race 2 are more diverse than in the past. The 691-hp all-wheel drive Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 is the most powerful as well as the most expensive. On the other hand, the 200-hp rear-drive Subaru BRZ has the least power and the cheapest.

The other vehicles in the field include the favourites such as the Nissan GT-R (which blew away the competition the race last year), the 662-hp Ford Shelby GT500, the 592-hp McLaren MP4-12C, and the 580-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The rest are comprised of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series, the Jaguar XKR-S, and the Porsche 911 Carrera S, which won as the Best Driver’s Car 2012.

Chevrolet officially debuts the 2012 Camaro ZL1 during the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. The brand said that this will not only be the highest-performing Camaro but it will also be the segment’s most technically advanced vehicle. Since it is expected to continue the momentum that was started by the Camaro, it will open up a new world of cutting-edge performance technology.

The name itself, which is the ZL1, is based on a racing engine made of aluminum and having the same name. This engine was first developed during the 1960s and later fitted to production versions of the 1969 Camaro. Given that only 69 units had this engine fitted inside, it has reached mythical status especially among the many enthusiasts.

This is not because of its rarity but also since it represented the height of Camaro performance, until today that is. Since the 2012 Camaro ZL1 was made to serve as a big step forward for this range, it also brings to its class a new level when it comes to performance. Powering this is the supercharge V8 engine which can deliver around 550 hp (410 kW).

With this output, the ZL1 will indeed prove it will be the fastest Camaro to come from the brand. In addition to power, this new model will also have a highly developed and technologically cutting edge suspension system and chassis system. Thus, the high power being delivered by the engine is balanced with the excellent braking power and the track-ready and balanced handling.

Chevrolet revealed that the ZL1 is still being developed but expects that official figures may likely be released sometime in 2011, which is also when the testing is expected to be completed. Chevrolet Marketing Vice President Rick Scheidt shared that the ZL1 is all about design and being able to deliver a high-tech performance.

It is a vehicle, he added, that has never before been seen for this class. He continued that since it is the most technologically advanced version of the Camaro, it used the name that many consider as the most exclusive and most elite of this range. Chevrolet will officially launch the 2012 Camaro ZL1 in the early part of 2012.
