Here comes the Red Rock Special Edition Soul, Kia Motors America’s seventh version of its Soul special edition cars. The Red Rock SE is inspired by the beautiful rock formations in the Southwest United States. After unveiling the Red Rock SE concept in the 2011 New York auto show, Kia toured the concept across the US to gauge consumer reaction.
The tour was a success, eliciting positive reactions. Kia then proceeded to send the concept to production and is now offering the Red Rock SE Soul at Kia dealerships. The production model is fitted with a number of features distinct from the previous Soul special editions.
The Red Rock Special Edition Soul has lustrous Canyon exterior finish highlighted by a high-gloss black front fascia and mirror housings. Inside the Red Rock Special Edition Soul, a customer can experience exclusive black leather trim and brown cloth seats. Standard features include automatic climate control and heated front.
Kia also made significant modifications to the standard 2012 Kia Soul, including technological, powertrain and style upgrades. The 2012 Kia Soul offers class-leading horsepower and improved fuel efficiency of up to 35 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway.
Later this model year, Kia will introduce and offer the fuel-saving ISG technology, which turns off the engine when the vehicle is not moving. This saves fuel when the car is at a stop light or in traffic. Kia will be the first among carmakers to offer this technology. A standard Kia Soul is available at starting price of $13,900 MSRP while the Red Rock Special Edition Soul is offered a base tag of around $20,600.
Kia Motors America has unveiled two models during the New York International Auto Show. The first is the upgraded version of the 2012 Kia Soul while the second is the new sub-compact 2012 Kia Rio sedan. Through the 2012 Kia Soul in particular, the brand hopes that the new engine and new transmission will increase the fun-to-drive factor. Powering it will be the GDI 1.6-liter engine which allows for output of 100 kW (135 hp), signaling an increase of 11% compared to the engine in the previous model.
This is paired to the 6-speed transmission and allows the engine to have fuel efficiency at 34 mph highway. For customers who want to experience more power, there is the option to have the 4-cylinder 2.0-liter engine that can be paired with either the automatic 6-speed transmission or the manual 6-speed unit.
This highly innovative technology is considered by many as rare especially for this particular segment. Commenting on the unveiling, Michael Sprague of Kia shared that within a span of two model years, the brand has managed to implement a number of enhancements to the 2012 Soul in terms of style, fuel economy, and power. The result is an iconic vehicle that will appeal even to those who want something that is outside the box, he added. Sprague continued by saying that the Soul has always been set apart from the rest and was responsible for two things.
The first is that it put the company in a position to experience various successes with the second being that the Soul has always been the model that brought in new customers to the brand. In addition to offering performance that is fun to drive and with a style to match it, the fuel economy of the new Soul is better by 10% compared to the previous generation, revealed Sprague.
Indeed, the 2012 Soul makes a comeback to New York and while it does have the same attitude that consumers the world over has known, it offers more power and displays an improved look. After all, this is the same model that started the design-led shift of the brand. For the 2012 model year, Kia made sure that the Soul would have the latest technologies and improvements to the powertrain so that it would have that added power and better fuel efficiency.
