The ultimate Performance Car of The Year for 2008, according to CAR magazine’s annual test, is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4. According to the November issue of CAR, after a series of tests on the road and on the track, the Gallardo LP 560-4 managed to outdo rivals like the Aston Martin DBS, Mercedes-Benz CLK Black and Porsche 911 GT2 in the supercar category.
It also managed to beat all other finalists from seven other categories -- like the Mitsubishi Evo 360, MINI John Cooper Works and Nissan GT-R – to grab the overall win. According to CAR editor Phil McNamara, their test is unique from other awards as it focuses more on emotion than science.
He remarked that CAR builds its decision on the way cars arouse the soul instead of judging them through their speed or maneuverability. McNamara noted that while all finalists are good performers, only one managed to outshine others to deliver its promises.
In conclusion, CAR magazine said the Gallardo LP 560-4 is a special car “to see and to drive.” Lamborghini unveiled the Gallardo LP 560-4 earlier this year as replacement for the original Gallardo. The carmaker has delivered around 7,100 Gallardo models since it was launched in 2003.
The new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 features a new engine mated to a permanent four-wheel drive transmission and a new suspension. Aside from enhanced performance and dynamics, the Gallardo LP560-4 features a design laden with powerful yet elegant classic lines that are distinctively Lamborghini.
According to Stephan Winkelmann, president and chief executive of Automobili Lamborghini, the LP560-4 will consolidate the success story of the original Gallardo, adding that the new model is bound to outclass its predecessor in every aspect. He noted that the new model features breathtaking dynamics and a standards-setting design.
He added that the introduction of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 should continue Lamborghini's growth strategy. Sitting at the core of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 is a 5.2 liter V10 engine that provides up to 560 PS (412 kW) in output at 8000 rpm.
This engine is 40 PS more powerful and 20 kg lighter than the one that powers the Gallardo. With a power-to-weight ratio of 2.5 kilograms per PS (hp), the LP560-4 is capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, and from nil to 200 km/h in 11.8 seconds.
Top speed is set at 325 km/h. Thanks to the direct fuel injection system "IniezioneDirettaStratificata," the new V10 engine is can increase its power while cutting its fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 18 percent.
