Lamborghini opens new facility to manufacture prototypes, pre-series vehicles

Article by Christian A., on July 10, 2012

Lamborghini has recently opened a new facility that’s intended for the limited production specialty models. At the facility, the automaker will be able to fine-tune its production. It believes that the risk of defects will be eliminated by duplicating the production line since it could now examine how each vehicle is built. Notably, this new manufacturing house would be energy-efficient.

From this facility, Lamborghini will make a limited edition of the Sesto Elemento (which is Italian for sixth element) concept seen at the 2010 Paris Auto Show. This car is named after carbon and so it is built nearly totally from this material. This car weighs 2,202 lbs. It will be powered by a 5.2-liter V10 engine that could deliver 562 hp. This car could then accelerate to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Only 20 samples of this car will be made.

“Our new building confirms Lamborghini's commitment not only to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, but also to advanced technology and innovation with an eye on the future" said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based company.

“The earthquakes that recently struck our region caused serious problems that have placed a considerable strain on us, on our families, and on our local area. However, we know that the strength to begin a new springs from the daily commitment and the work that each of us brings to bear. That’s why today’s inauguration also has a symbolic meaning of renaissance and of a strong impetus for recovery".

One of the things that make the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 stand out from the rest is the technology package made available for it. For one, it utilizes the pioneering monocoque that is composed of carbon fiber resulting in it being lightweight while at the same time offering a high amount of stiffness and with it safety. Powering it is the new twelve-cylinder 6.5-liter engine capable of 700 hp (515 kW) which not only offers excitement in high revvs but come with a surprisingly low-end torque.

With a dry weight measuring 3,472 lbs. (1,575 kg), this amounts to a power-to-weight ratio of 4.96 lb/hp (2.25 kg/hp). With a maximum speed of 217 mph (350 km/h), acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) is possible in 2.9 seconds. Even then, it does not really describe entirely the performance of this model. In addition, even with these excellent performance figures, which reveal an 8% increase in the power compared to the previous model, both the fuel consumption and the CO2 emissions are lower by 20%.

With this latest offering, Automobili Lamborghini believes it will redefine what it means to be at the top of the super sports car market. The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 is able to combine exceptional lightweight engineering, raw power, and extraordinary handling precision, which have an unmatched design. Add in the best equipment fitted inside then you get a truly one-of-a-kind driving experience.

Through this model, the brand is moving forward to the future by building on it a long and wonderful history. Deliveries of the new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 to the first customers are scheduled in the late summer of 2011.
