Land Rover will produce new flagship model to rival Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce Cullinan

Article by Christian A., on July 10, 2017

The uber-luxurious sports utility vehicle market is definitely growing quickly, Bentley has its own Bentayga and Rolls-Royce is now prepping the Cullinan. And now, it seems that Land Rover wants a piece of the action by possibly expanding their lineup with a SUV that will sit on top of the current range topper, the Range Rover SV Autobiography.

The juicy details are not really that crystal clear at this point in time due to the fact that it is still a question mark if the Land Rover "SUV" will be a completely different model or just another luxurious trim for the Range Rover. By far, the most expensive and premium Land Rover model was the Range Rover Holland and Holland, which costs around £180,000 in United Kingdom and $244,500 in United States.

Unfortunately, the SUV is no longer available as it was only released for a limited time only. The Tata Motors-owned company does not have a vehicle to rival the Bentley Bentayga as of the moment, but this could possibly change in the following years as this uber-premium range topper is being planned. Furthermore, a Mercedes-Maybach marked SUV will supposedly be produced in the next years to come.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's design chief, revealed in an interview with Automotive News Europe that there is still room in the lineup for a new flagship vehicle that will be situated above the long-wheelbase Range Rover SV Autobiography. If this will be produced in the future, this vehicle will be more expensive than the current range topper, which will be sold in the United Kingdom at a cool £158,350 and an astounding $199,950 in the United States.

This mysterious vehicle might not be the new ultra-luxurious model to be placed above the SV Autobiography as there's a chance it can be a different model. However, it doesn’t instantly translate that the vehicle will be larger than the Range Rover, as the design chief cleared up that two cars of about the same size but with different vibes can co-exist without the concern of negatively impacting each other's market sales as these various models have different demographic target.

McGovern continued to point out that a new Range Rover to rival the Bentley Bentayga would have the advantage. He added that Bentley does not have the “pedigree and authenticity” in that specific segment, whereas he commented that Land Rover has an unquestionable lineage. As of now, Land Rover is setting its sights on expanding the Range Rover line-up to accommodate to a larger audience and market.

First is the Evoque, and then the Velar, Sport and the original, full-sized model. These mentioned models have more novelties and luxuries compared to the base Land Rover models like the Discovery Sport and the recently released Discovery.
