Lexus LF-LC Blue Concept debuts at Australian International Motor Show

Lexus has unveiled its LF-LC Blue high performance sports coupe concept at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, Australia. The LF-LC Blue represents a further development of the model that was revealed at the 2012 Detroit motor show earlier this year. While the Detroit model dons a burning red finish, the one displayed in Sydney sports an Opal Blue finish, as inspired by the natural base color of the Australian gemstone.

The LF-LC is an amalgam of advanced technologies and materials and carries an organic design that will serve as styling cues for future Lexus sports models. The LF-LC Blue features the use of lightweight carbon fibre and the next generation of Lexus’ full hybrid powertrain.

Lexus banked on its experience and in-house capabilities gained from development of the LFA supercar to create the LF-LC. This is much notable on the successful combination of carbon fibre and aluminium alloy materials in the concept’s construction, resulting to a light body mass. The LF-LC Blue provides an ideal platform for the next generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system.

The so-called Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive features a high-energy battery pack designed to deliver more power from a unit smaller than those in Lexus’ current full hybrid model range.

The LF-LC’s full petrol-electric system provides up to 500bhp (372kW), which is significantly higher than any other Lexus hybrid. The LF-LC Blue is touted to demonstrate the future of sports cars, as Lexus has been synonymous with hybrid power, superior build quality, comfort and reliability. The LF-LC concept provides a glimpse of what Lexus might be planning for the future.

Exterior Design

Talking about the exterior, the front section has a commanding presence especially with the daytime running lights sculpted into an L-shape. The fading dot matrix pattern and vertical fog lamps result in giving a feel of movement. Following this theme, the side profile is just as commanding because of the deeply sculpted air intakes positioned behind the vehicle’s doors. On top of the LF-LC is the glass wrap-around roof which allows occupants inside to get a better look on the outside.

The roof also helps slice through the air as it moves. In terms of structure, the glass roof has a cantilevered pillar that is also lightweight. Then there is the glass-to-glass junction that is clearly inspired by a more contemporary architecture. The LF-LC has those dynamic lies that go all the way to the rear deck. These same dynamic lines are able to integrate the vehicle’s spindle grille theme in a sculptural way.

The result is that it helps give the LF-LC a distinct sense of width while being able to complement the design of the front. Still on the rear section, the tail lamps have a design that have been inspired by the afterburner of a jet. To give that sense of depth, it utilizes inner lighting to full effect. Fitted in the rear as well are the fog lamps which mirror those in the front and their fading dot matrix pattern. Further, the fog lamps and the tail integrated to it follow the L-shape in the front. It also puts focus on the brand’s powerful quad exhaust.

Interior Design

The LF-LC concept’s interior was designed in a way that it would serve as a contrast to the already cool atmosphere exuded by the cutting-edge technology inside. This was made possible through the use of organic shapes mixed in with soft textures. The result is an interior that has both function and form while being driver-focused. Indeed, the cockpit gives a sense of security and openness.

Further, having a curved and high console, plus deeply scooped side panels, make it seem as if the drive was covered. The main effect is to make sure that the driver zone is focused on both the road and the controls. Lexus has long been dedicated to releasing vehicles that offer a driving experience that is truly intuitive. This is why the LF-LC makes use of a touch-screen device that can be remotely controlled.

With this, the driver can operate the necessary controls without any need to change the line of sight or even shift position. Meanwhile any information that the driver needs, and even those related to navigation, are shown on either of the two LCD 12.3-inch screens. The inputs to the screen come from a touch-screen control board placed on the center console.

In addition, the interface can be used to manage a number of features like the navigation, climate controls, and audio system. Should the entry be a little more complex, a touch-screen pop-up keyboard is available.

Meanwhile in front of the driver are different LCD technologies and even multi-level meters layer analogue. The bottom portion for example shows the fuel and the temperature, as well as the Eco meter’s background. In the middle, one can see the mechanical center ring of the tachometer. Finally on the top is where the indicators of the Eco meter, speedometer, and tachometer, have been placed. Overall the interior uses a brown and white combination with clearly a number of excellent technologies equipped inside. The same can be said for the exterior with its engineering features.

Lexus LF-LC Blue Concept

Lexus has revealed the stunning Lexus LF-LC Blue concept at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

Clad in unique Opal Blue, it is the second version of the LF-LC, first debuted at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

The all-new Opal Blue exterior is inspired by the lustrous base colour found in the naturally occurring semi-precious opal stone of outback Australia. Beneath the blue skin LF-LC combines advanced technologies and materials with organic design, giving an insight into what the future of sports cars may hold. Central to the concept is a suite of advanced materials and technologies, including lightweight carbon fibre and the next generation of Lexus\' industry-leading hybrid powertrain.

New to LF-LC and derived from project LFA, LF-LC leverages Lexus\' extensive in-house experience in marrying carbon fibre and aluminium alloy materials to achieve a light body mass.

The result is an extremely taut body that responds quickly and crisply to driver inputs - providing the perfect platform for the next-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system. Dubbed Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive, the system features a powerful and efficient Atkinson cycle combustion engine which is mated to an advanced high-energy battery pack. The high-energy battery pack is designed to deliver greater power from a smaller battery than those currently used in Lexus\' range of hybrid vehicles.

Combined, the Lexus LF-LC Blue concept\'s petrol/electric hybrid powertrain develops 372kW (500hp) - the most of any Lexus hybrid.

LF-LC Blue is a demonstration of what the future may hold for sports cars. For decades, Lexus has been synonymous with hybrid drivetrains, superior build quality, comfort and reliability. With the LF-LC Lexus now reinforces its design and technology credentials. The concept hints at what\'s to come from Lexus, and we are actively studying how we can engineer and build a vehicle like this in the future.


Supporting LF-LC\'s engineering features is a stunning, technology-laden exterior and interior, clad in a new white and brown interior.

Commanding the concept\'s bold front end are sculpted \"L\" shaped daytime running lights, vertical fog lamps and a fading dot matrix pattern to convey a sense of movement. Continuing the sense of motion, LF-LC\'s side profile is commanded by deeply sculpted air intakes behind the doors.

A wrap-around glass roof provides a panoramic view to the outside world while slicing through the air.

The concept car\'s glass roof features a lightweight, cantilevered pillar with a glass-to-glass junction inspired by modern architecture. LF-LC\'s dynamic lines are carried through to the rear deck, sculpturally integrating the spindle grille theme to complement the front of the vehicle while creating a unique sense of width.

Tail lamps, inspired by a jet aeroplane afterburner, make use of inner lighting to create a remarkable sense of depth.

The rear is also fitted with fog lamps, repeating the fading dot matrix pattern of the front fog lamps.

Visually, the integrated tail and fog lamps repeat the \"L\" shape and lead the viewer\'s eye down to the powerful Lexus quad exhaust.


The interior of the LF-LC concept contrasts the cool ambience of advanced technology with soft textures and organic shapes to create a driver-focused synergy of form and function. The cockpit expresses a feeling of both openness and security. The driver is enveloped by deeply scooped side panels and a high, curved console. The effect is to focus the driver zone on the controls and on the road.

Based on Lexus\' commitment to creating an intuitive driving experience, the LF-LC incorporates a remote touch-screen device that allows the driver to comfortably operate controls without shifting position or altering their line of sight. Twin 12.3-inch LCD screens provide information and navigation display. Inputs come from a touch-screen control board piercing the swept centre console.

The interface is used to control the audio system, climate controls and navigation, and features a pop-up touch-screen keyboard for more complex entries. Set directly in front of the driver, multi-level meters layer analogue and LCD technologies.

The bottom layer displays temperature, fuel and the background for the Eco meter. The middle layer is the tachometer mechanical centre ring. The topmost layer provides indicators for the tachometer, speedometer and Eco meter.

Surfaces throughout the cabin are presented in a combination of smooth leather and suede, with brushed metal trim and wood accents.

The lightweight, race-inspired front seats are formed of multiple layers and repeat the interlacing curves that define the cabin interior.

The racing-style steering wheel is clad in lightweight carbon fibre and contains integrated controls and start button.
