Lotus preparing Elise Purist Edition for the U.S.

Article by Christian A., on August 29, 2010

With the current economic condition, carmakers are having greater difficulty in attracting dealerships and ensuring sales. So, car companies are experimenting with just about all kinds of schemes just to lure dealerships.

The carmaker Lotus is taking the tested and proven path to address the current situation with what it calls the Purist edition, which is an offering of an abundance of features for a lower price tag.

It is constructed around a Sport-package Elise including every option available to the Touring Package also, but excluding the leather-trimmed transmission tunnel, leather door inserts and iPod interface.

According to an Auto publication, the car begins at $43,995, a $5,000 cut in its original sticker price. The sticker price for a base Elise begins at $47,250, providing the car with options worth $1,600 and at the same time cutting a large discount above that. This is simply irresistible.

Besides the additional options, the Purist Edition will also be offered in only three limited colors: Ardent Red, Monaco White and Saffron Yellow, which is the same color as the European Elise 111R. On the inside, Momo leather steering wheel, air condition, CD player and a start button are complimented by a black leather interior design.

There is yet no available photo for the car, but since the details of the car are now in the open expect them to follow quickly. The vehicle is driven by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder powerplant that generates 189hp (141kW).

However, in spite of the small engine, the car gives a remarkable punch, with sprint rate of 0-60 (96km/h) in 4.9 seconds, reaching 100mph (160km/h) in 12.9, and hitting a 150mph (241km/h) maximum speed. The fuel economy number is 21mpg in the city and 27mpg on the highway, and all of these because of a curb weight of 1,984lb (899kg) only.
