Mercedes-AMG preparing the new 53 line

Article by Christian A., on August 10, 2017

Most of you must’ve heard the news that Mercedes Benz’s high-performance arm has got something up on its sleeve. This is true since Mercedes-AMG has been working on a new hybrid system to be eventually included into its entire range of engines.

In fact, the CLS 53 AMG will be the first to have the new performance hybrid system. It’s expected to go on sale sometime next year. There has been no confirmation yet on when the premiere will take place but Mercedes will probably launch the new CLS version before the end of 2018. It’s anticipated that when combined with its new 3.0-liter inline six turbo along with its 67hp electric motor, this hybrid power plant should be more or less capable of delivering a total of 496 hp output.

Further, the new AMG 53 lineup will actually replace the AMG 43 range with 3.0-liter V6 motor. The inline-six turbo will make use of both eZV or electric auxiliary compressor and ISG (or the Integrated Starter Alternator) to achieve up to 70,000 rounds per minute at merely 300 milliseconds. In short, Mercedes-Benz’s new hybrid technology isn’t just powerful but is also relatively more efficient.

Unfortunately, the S-Class with the new turbo hybrid system will be marketed only outside the US. As different sources say, the S Class AMG 53 model will not arrive in America. However, a new V6 gasoline engine will be offered with it instead. Let's wait and see where this will go.

As of now, what we do know is that the CLS is moving to MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) as its new platform. This by the way is the same platform they have been using on the new Mercedes E-Class. Therefore, expect the new CLS to offer ample space at the interior together with a long list of semi-autonomous driving features.

Nonetheless, all Mercedes Benz using the MRA platform will be having the new AMG 53 powertrain which includes the new GLS, GLE and GLC SUVs as well as the S-Class, E-Class and C-Class models. This only proves that Mercedes is ultimately headed to an electrified AMG lineup.

If there's anything else to say about this, Mercedes- AMG is clearly moving forward by introducing a new hybrid system along with the new CLS model. And with the much awaited premiere of the Mercedes-Benz CLS happening inevitably, more details are sure to come out within the next several days. Other than that, the German car maker is also said to be introducing a new AMG GT four door model. This is definitely something to watch out for real soon.
