Article by Christian A., on September 1, 2011

Sony Computer Entertainment and Mercedes-Benz have come together to set up this unique event where millions of viewers can watch the ultimate virtual v. reality race on the Internet wherein fans of the PlayStation’s Gran Turismo 5 will have the opportunity to race against Formula 1 ace David Coulthard and the clock, in what could be the biggest race ever recorded.

On September 5, 2011, Monday, at 15:20 (BST) and broadcast live, Coulthard will drive a real 6.3 liter V8 powered Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. His rivals will be the GT5 fans from across the European region, simultaneously pitting their wits against the world-class professional driver.

To enhance the drama of the event, the track will be kept a secret until the day in order to provide all racers a fair chance at victory. At Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey, 24 prize draw winners will be competing to qualify for their place in the race on the renowned racing game for PlayStation 3.

The players garnering the top six qualifying times will battle against Coulthard in real time at the flagship venue where spectators can watch the action themselves.

Contestants from the Mercedes-Benz World with the fastest lap will win an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2011 Brazilian Formula 1™ Grand Prix on November 27. Moreover, European gamers will be able to battle in the same vehicle on GT5™ in order to get their name up in lights on the leader board of the specially created in-game “seasonal event”.

The footage of Coulthard driving the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and of the real-time PlayStation® players at Mercedes-Benz World is available for viewing. Live pre-race coverage from Formula 1™ commentator Martin Brundle could be seen at www.mercedesliverace.co.uk on the race day commencing at 15:00 (BST).
