Mercedes-Benz GL Coupe in the works, will go into production in 2016

Yesterday we told you that Bmw is preparing the X7, but today we found out that the other German rival, Mercedes-Benz, is also working on a large SUV. According to German magazine, AutoBild, Mercedes-Benz is working on a coupe version of the GL-Class and the new model could make its debut in 2016.

As expected, the third-row SUV will be produced for markets such as China and United States. What’s more interesting is that Mercedes-Benz doesn’t expect impressive sales from the GL Coupe but the German manufacturer will become even more popular in China or United States.

Moreover, the new Mercedes-Benz GL Coupe will not need a big investment to be produced due to the fact that it will share most of the technology and electronics with the GL-Class. Still, in terms of design, the new GL Coupe will gave a longer roof, completely new bumpers, headlights, front grille and an upgraded interior.

Under the hood it will feature a super fuel-efficient six-cylinder diesel engine which will deliver, for the first time, more than 300 hp. The engine will offer a nine-speed automatic transmission. A V8 petrol engine will also be offered, while a new generation will follow somewhere in 2017. These are the first details regarding the new GL Coupe, but as soon as we will find out something new we will let you know!

At a quick glance, the brand-new Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can be undeniably identified as a member of the Mercedes-Benz SUV family. The fresh rendition of the first generation is just spectacular with its pronounced dynamic prowess and a touch of sporting sophistication. At the front, the design is commanded by the GL’s usually upright radiator grille with its trademark star and the clear, high-quality headlamp design – the top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz LED signature.

The traditional Intelligent Light System headlamps on the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY offer a premium, elite and elegant impression. The distinction lies in a light wave conductor for the position lights, the practical and optional Night View Assist PLUS, and the LED technology indicators. The daytime running LED lamps are fused in a chrome clasp in the front bumper and below the radiator grille, the huge underbody panel in chrome look puts an exclamation mark to the bespoke appearance of the front. The symmetrical size of the side view (5120 mm long and 1850 mm high) and the long wheelbase (3075 mm) accentuates the vehicle’s on-road prominence, but at the same time, the short body overhang at front and rear, along with the vehicle’s considerable ground clearance point to its precision for off-road journey.

The rear with its two-piece LED rear lamps using light wave conductor technology, the bumper with its new “wing design”, a huge roof spoiler, and the big chromed area of the underbody panel rounds off its stylish look, befitting the social status of this magnificent full-size SUV. For the first time in ages, an extensive AMG exterior sport package is available for those GL aficionados who find it necessary for their vehicle to have a sporting and dynamic vibe.
