We already know that Mercedes-Benz is currently working on a rival for the BMW X6 based on the M-Class. Still, today we found out that the upcoming vehicle which is dubbed ML Coupe, will also offer a high performance version, which will probable by named ML63 AMG Coupe. The new AMG-badged ML Coupe will take on cars such as the BMW X6 M.
The standard ML Coupe will be based on Concept Coupe SUV that was unveiled back in April at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. As expected, the AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz ML Coupe will receive a new styling consisting of a new front bumper with larger air intakes, the AMG badges as well as a new rear bumper that perfectly integrates the AMG performance exhaust system.
In addition, the sporty SUV will offer new AMG alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tires and a stiffer suspension. The interior will also be overhauled as it will offer a sports steering wheel, aluminum pedals and new sport seats wearing the AMG badge.
Under the hood, we will find a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged B8 engine that will deliver 525 hp and 700 Nm of torque (516 lb-ft). Mercedes-Benz is also expected to offer an AMG Performance Package that will boost the engine to almost 560 hp.
BMW will roll out its new X6 M by the end of the year after its official debut from the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, in November, while the new Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG Coupe will arrive in 2015. The new model will use the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that will deliver 560 hp and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque. So, things are pretty clear: a new war is starting, this time among high-performance SUVs.
Mercedes-Benz is setting the standards higher with the Concept Coupe SUV. On one hand, the new concept vehicle is a typical embodiment of the carmaker’s coupe tradition with its physical attributes like its flowing side line, stretched greenhouse as well as a stunning radiator grille with central chrome louver. On the other hand, the new concept vehicle also dons SUV-like characteristics like large wheel arches, massive 22-inch wheels, muscular wings, generous ground clearance and high beltline.
The new Concept Coupe SUV is also designed to offer superior levels of dynamic handling on the road thanks to the network of its powertrain, suspension and interior. Furthermore, the "Dynamic Select Control" variable dynamic control system allows for four different transmission modes as well as an individually programmable setup.
Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes, described the exterior looks of the Concept Coupe SUV to be as sensual as a coupe and as visionary as an SUV. Featuring four doors and an all-wheel-drive system, the Concept Coupe SUV measures almost five meters in length, two meters in width (as made possible by its flared wheel arches and broad shoulders), and 1.75 meters in height.
Wagener remarked that the new Concept Coupe SUV stands out because of its extreme proportions, allowing the design study to perfectly interpret the signature Mercedes coupe design idiom. He quipped that the superior sportiness of the Concept Coupe SUV communicates a sense of modern luxury as well as aesthetic aspirations of sensual clarity.
Elements like frameless side windows and the recessed door handles are blended elegantly into the flanks of the Concept Coupe SUV help highlight its coupe-like character. As per tradition and just like all of Mercedes’ recent concept vehicles, the Concept Coupe SUV is wrapped in the "Alu-Beam" exterior finish that evokes technically innovative Silver Arrows of the 1930s and 1950s.
