Mercedes-Benz officially unveiled today its all-new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that will be powering the 2015 Mercedes-AMG GT. Codenamed M178, the new 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine delivers 510 hp (375 kW) at 6,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) between 1,750 rpm and 4,750 rpm.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the engine is the latest member of the BlueDIRECT engine family, it is Euro 6-compliant and has a weight of 209 kg (460 lbs). The new engine features motorsport-inspired technology such as optimized cylinder heads with zirconium alloy for maximum temperature and thermal conductivity.
The four-valve-per-cylinder design with twin overhead camshaft (DOHC) with camshaft adjustment on the inlet and outlet side enables excellent response and optimizes gas cycle for each operating point. The forged pistons feature lightweight design with high strength and a low-friction piston ring package.
As you can see from the photos, the engine’s turbocharges are located inside the “Hot Inner” V8 engine in order to keep the unit as compact as possible.
Mercedes-Benz is expected to use the new 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine on the new C63 AMG models but the first to use it will be the Mercedes-AMG GT, which will go on sale in March 2015.
Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG, called the new Mercedes-AMG GT as a sports car in its purist form. He described the new AMG GT as a contemporary sports car that embodies the spirit of the brand’s glorious sports cars, as made possible by its spectacular proportions, powerfully sculpted surfaces and flowing lines. He also dubbed the new AMG-GT as a consummate combination of beauty and intelligence.
Indeed, the new Mercedes-AMG GT could be considered as an embodiment of the sensual purity of sportiness and emotion. Provided with signature rear-wheel-drive proportions, the new AMG GT is fitted with a V8 biturbo front mid-engine layout that allows for optimal weight distribution. Its distinctive appearance is brought by its long bonnet with pronounced powerdomes and a greenhouse shifted farther to the back as well as large wheels, a broad tail end and a large tailgate.
Thanks to arched surfaces, the new AMG GT lives with a sensuous character and looks like a work of art. Its stunning profile reveals a dome-shaped, arched roof line, frameless doors as well as a muscular element sculpted out of the flanks – all making it seem the vehicle is lighter than it is and is moving even at a standstill. Its profile also reveals surfaces and lines flowing into the rear end with a tapered effect.
As designed, the new AMG GT has no lines in its shoulder region, and this is deliberate. The only line that new AMG GT has is located further down and re-emerges rear bumper, there stretching its body and making the vehicle look lighter. Just like any Mercedes sports car, the new AMG GT comes with side air outlets, each with two fins. However, the new AMG GT features no visible aerials which might upset its overall looks.
