While the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is considered as the best vehicle in the luxury car segment, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has the distinction of being the best sports car. These were based on the survey conducted by German motoring magazine "Auto, Motor und Sport" on its readers.
The SLS in fact has been chosen as the "Best car of the year" in its particular category for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, the S-Class saloon has consistently been winning the award for a number of times over the past years. Indeed, the awards more than confirm that these cars from the Stuttgart-based automaker deserve to be at their illustrious position.
The German-based motoring magazine started its poll for the "Best cars of the year" back in 1977. For 2011, at least 90,000 of its readers participated in the survey to determine the year’s best cars.
This year, the magazine editors made their readers choose from a selection of 315 vehicles grouped in ten different categories, including 40 brand-new vehicles. Under the luxury car category, the S-Class has been awarded first place for a number of times in the past. This achievement is in recognition of the already outstanding position that this best-selling luxury saloon has had for many years.
Some outstanding features of this famed saloon include the unmatched state-of-the-art technology and the high comfort level it provides especially on long journeys. Under the sports car category, readers named the SLS AMG as its top choice.
This same super sports car had won the "Best sports car of the year" in 2010, the year it first joined the list. The SLS AMG has the gull-wing doors. Its exciting design brings back to mind the 300 SL, the stuff of sporting legend during the 1950s.
Not only does this super sports car manage to impress everyone with the amazing technology but it also has other superb features like the its aluminium spaceframe body shell. Powering this already robust car is the 6.3-liter AMG front-mid V8 engine that utilizes dry sump lubrication and delivers 420 kW, around 571 hp, of power and maximum torque at 650 Nm.
It is paired with the dual-clutch seven-speed transmission arranged in a transaxle configuration with a responsive sport suspension that has the double-wishbone axles in aluminum. It is because of this combination that the SLS AMG is able to raise driving dynamics to its highest level.
