Mercedes-Benz has launched a new S-Class Cabriolet – the first open-top luxury four-seater from the automaker since 1971. This new Cabriolet-- the sixth variant of the present S-Class range – is set to make its global debut at the upcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show. Its design is unique, sensual, and exclusive.
It has the sophisticated technology of the S-Class and was built with a focus on comprehensive warmth and wind protection, the concept used for the convertibles’ intelligent climate control. The elegantly sporty model is exceedingly rigid. The new S-Class Cabriolet comes with innovations like the luggage compartment bulkhead built with aluminium and magnesium. It also has an aluminium rear floor.
As a result, its bodyshell weight has been reduced to the level of the S-Class Coupé. For the first time, the standard-fit roll-over protection system behind the rear head restraints utilizes pyrotechnic initiation of the actuators.
Aside from that, the roll bars are put in place with a gas generator. The automaker has always prided itself for producing the most comfortable convertible in the world. Climate comfort is made possible with the improved automatic wind protection system AIRCAP, the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, the heated armrests, the seat heating that is positioned in the rear, as well as the intelligent climate control.
What makes it different from the conventional systems is that climate control is fully automatic. The driver doesn’t have to choose a mode for either closed or open top. He or she also doesn’t have to set the temperature for these driving conditions.
Mercedes-Benz’s meticulous attention to details is obvious in the luggage compartment concept. When the driver opens the soft top, it is then folded away into part of the luggage compartment. Separating the soft top and what remains of the luggage compartment space is an electrically operated retractable cover which encompasses the soft top. When the soft top is being opened, the luggage compartment partition extends automatically. The driver doesn’t anymore have to stop just to manually operate the luggage compartment cover.
This makes it more convenient. If the luggage compartment is loaded and there are objects in the partition area, the partition can’t be activated. If the soft top is closed, pressing a button in the boot lid’s inner panelling will retract the luggage compartment partition to expand the luggage space. More benefits include the electro-hydraulic remote locking for the luggage compartment (which is offered as standard equipment) and a through-loading facility into the interior.
