Mercedes-Benz sold 100,000 units of the new S-Class in just one year

Article by Christian A., on October 17, 2014

In just a year after the S-Class models were launched, Mercedes-Benz revealed that it had delivered at least 100,000 units of this model to its core markets around the world. Delivering such a number of luxury sedans to customers, particularly in the first year it became fully available, has never been seen before. Even today, this remains by far to be the most successful for the S-Class, in terms of market launch.

However this new S-Class generation is not only the most successful when it comes to market launch, but it is also the fastest market launch. In fact in barely twelve weeks, the brand managed to put the S-Class on sale in all the three core markets. It went on sale in Germany by the end of July 2013, then China by the end of September of the same year and finally in the U.S. towards mid-October 2013.

Mercedes-Benz revealed that since the beginning of the year, it has sold a total of 75,391 units of the S-Class. This is twice than what was sold in the same period of the prior year, or specifically an increase of 105.8%. Overall, in just nine months of 2014, more S-Class models have been delivered compared to the full year 2012, and even 2013.

In the month of September for example, 9,501 units of this luxury sedan were sold, an increase of 139.3%. According to Ola Källenius, who is a Member of the Divisional Board of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales, being able to sell a total of 100,000 units of the S-Class in just one year is indeed the ultimate proof.

The S-Class remains to keep customers happy and able to meet even their highest of demands due to the exceptional mix of exemplary efficiency, high-class quality, and a wide range of innovative safety and assistance systems. Källenius said towards the end of September, the brand extended its range of luxury cars to include two promising and fascinating versions with the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID and the S-Class coupe.

Mercedes-Benz disclosed that a total of six versions of the S-Class will be offered. While the S-Class already has the long wheelbase and short wheelbase versions, the brand launched in September 27 the S-Class coupe. The other three variants, all exclusive, will be released later. It should be noted that the brand had released a plug-in hybrid derivative of this sedan at the end of September. With the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID and the S 400 HYBRID long made available, it makes the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID the third hybrid model to be part of the S-Class.

According to Mercedes-Benz, series production of this particular technology started back in 2009 and it projects that nine additional plug-in hybrid models will be launched by 2017. Those familiar with the S-Class model series know that it was the launching 60 sixty years ago of the 220 model that served as the basis for the S-Class. Ever since that time, a total of 3.5 million units of these vehicles have been delivered to customers worldwide.

This flagship model of the brand has long been considered as the standard when it comes to automotive engineering. This is an honor it has continuously received with the release of each new generation mainly due to a mix of cutting-edge technologies, exceptional comfort, and revolutionary safety systems. With 500,000 units sold, the previous generation of the S-Class model is considered as the most successful of all time.

For years now, the S-Class has managed to remain as the top-selling luxury sedan in the world. This model’s largest market continues to be China where the S-Class is sold almost every second. Of the total S-Class sales, 25% is sold in the U.S. Meanwhile 10% of sedan sales were by customers in Germany. In terms of age, customers from China are in their early 40s though this remains to be the youngest.

Customers in the U.S. or Western Europe are generally older by 15 years. For a number of customers, the S-Class is the first car that they will ever own. Specifically for the Chinese market, it is estimated that of the S-Class models ordered, 35% are the chauffeur-driven version. Further, 75% of S-Class customers in China prefer the Rear Seat Entertainment System which has two large displays positioned on the backrests of the model’s front seats.

Mercedes-Benz also made changes to the PARKTRONIC assistance system to account for the limited space and the heavy traffic in the different mega-cities of China. A popular feature as well, and not just in China, is the AIR-BALANCE package. The brand revealed as well that each second this model is shipped around the world, it is done so with the fragrancing and intensive air filtration option. One out of four customers of this luxury sedan also opts to have the massage function.

Mercedes-Benz luxury sedan on course of success: 100,000 S-Class models sold in just one year

One year after the launch in all core markets Mercedes-Benz has already delivered over 100,000 S-Class models worldwide. Never before have so many vehicles of the luxury sedan been delivered to customers in the first year of full availability. As such, to date this constitutes the most successful market launch of an S-Class. The new-generation S-Class is, however, not only making history with the most successful market launch, but also with the fastest market launch: within less than twelve weeks the S-Class went on sale in all three core markets: Germany (end of July 2013), China (end of September 2013) and the USA (mid-October 2013).

“The sales figure of 100,000 S-Class models in just one year is the ultimate proof: the combination of high-class quality, exemplary efficiency and a host of innovative assistance and safety systems delights our customers and meets their highest demands”, says Ola Källenius, Member of the Divisional Board of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales. “We extended our range of luxury cars at the end of September by including two fascinating and promising models in the guise of the new S-Class coupe and the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID.”

Since the start of the year Mercedes-Benz has sold 75,391 S-Class models, twice as many as in the same period of the previous year (+105.8%). Thus more S-Class vehicles have been delivered to customers within the nine months of 2014 than in the full years 2012 or 2013. In September alone, the luxury sedan was sold 9,501 times (+139.3%).

China and USA as biggest markets

For decades the S-Class has repeatedly been the world’s top-selling luxury sedan. Mercedes-Benz delivers almost every second S-Class to customers in China, the model’s largest market. One quarter of all S-Classes is sold in the USA; one in ten sedans goes to a customer in Germany. A country comparison reveals that the youngest S-Class customers are located in China: in their early 40s, they are on average 15 years younger than in Western Europe or the USA. For many, the S-Class is their very first own car. Given the particular preference of Chinese customers for ample room in the rear, Mercedes-Benz has been offering the luxury sedan in China as a long-wheelbase version exclusively. Some 35 percent of S-Class models are ordered in China explicitly as a chauffeur-driven variant.Three quarters of all S-Class customers in China also choose the Rear Seat Entertainment System which features two large displays in the backrests of the front seats. The Stuttgart-based premium brand has also modified the PARKTRONIC assistance system to the heavy traffic and limited space found in Chinese mega-cities. The AIR-BALANCE package is also very popular among S-Class customers – and not just in China. Every second S-Class worldwide is shipped with the intensive air filtration and fragrancing option. One out of every four luxury sedan customers opts for the massage function.

Luxury car family with six derivatives

The new S-Class will be available in six variants altogether. In addition to the short and long-wheelbase version, the S-Class coupe was launched on 27 September. Three other exclusive derivatives are set to follow. A plug-in hybrid variant of the S-Class also went on sale at the end of September. Following the S 400 HYBRID and the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID is therefore the third hybrid model in the new S-Class.The series production launch of this technology began at Mercedes-Benz in 2009. By 2017, Mercedes-Benz aims to launch nine further plug-in hybrid models.

60 years ago, the launch of the 220 model laid the foundations for the S-Class model series. Since then Mercedes-Benz has delivered more than 3.5 million of these vehicles to customers all around the world. The brands flagship has for many years been considered the benchmark of automotive engineering, a distinction that it has repeatedly earned with every new generation thanks to innovative technologies, pioneering safety systems and outstanding comfort. The previous generation sold 500,000 units, becoming the most successful S-Class model series of all time.
