For the past years, Mercedes-Benz has been unveiling spectacular concepts or visions. There were the AMG Vision GT and the Concept IAA, as well as the Vision Maybach 6 and the Vision Maybach 6 Cabriolet. Its latest concept, unveiled at the Monterey Car Week, is likewise nothing short of stunning while showing off the carmaker’s glorious past. This concept is the new Mercedes-Benz Vision EQ Silver Arrow.
Just by looking at this concept, people can’t help but associate with Mercedes’ Grand Prix racing cars in the 1930s. During this period, Mercedes cars were called Silver Arrows. Actually, the new Vision EQ Silver Arrow is inspired by and pays tribute to the 1937 Mercedes W125 Grand Prix racing car. Driven by the legendary Rudolf Caracciola, the W125 set a new speed record on public roads in 1937 after averaging 432.7 km/h (268.8 mph) on the A5 autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. This record sat untouched for around 80 years, until it was broken in November 2017.
Just like the 1937 W125, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow features a long and extended front section and short front overhang. The round cockpit glazing of the Vision EQ Silver Arrow -- modeled on a drop of water in terms of outline and cross-section – was also inspired by the W125. Similar to the Silver Arrows, this one-seater concept is wrapped in alubeam silver paint.
While paying tribute to the past, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow also points to the future. The Vision EQ Silver Arrow boasts of a streamlined silhouette that measures around 5.3 meters in length and a meter in height. Its body structure is made from carbon fiber, and so is its front splitter. The Vision EQ Silver Arrow features a continuous lighting strip at the front and side skirts. The concept also has a large, recessed blue-illuminated EQ lettering in front of the rear wheels. On the rear, the concept has two extendible rear spoilers that also act as an air brake.
The Vision EQ Silver Arrow rides on partially free-standing wheels with non-rotating hub caps and 168 spokes per wheel. Made of lightweight aluminum, the spokes are finished rose gold color. The wheels are shod with Pirelli tires measuring 255/25 R 24 at the front and 305/25 R 26 at the rear. The tires feature a star pattern on the tread.
Interestingly, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow comes with a driver's cockpit that can be folded forwards. Just like exterior, the interior blends the past with the future. The cabin employs traditional, high-quality materials like genuine leather, polished aluminum as well as solid walnut. The futuristic cockpit is installed with a curved panoramic screen that projects a 3D image of the surroundings from the rear. It is also installed with a steering wheel-integrated touchscreen that can be used to choose programs like Comfort, Sport and Sport+.
According to Mercedes, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow is as an electric vehicle with an output of 550 kW (750 hp). Its 80-kWh thin rechargeable battery allows the concept to achieve a range of more than 400 km, as per the WLTP cycle. Installed on the underbody, the battery is cooled through the side air vents.
