MINI begins production at Chennai plant in India

BMW Group is expanding its international production network by adding local production sites for select MINI models, in response to increasing global demand for the brand’s premium vehicles. For the first time since the MINI brand was re-launched in 2001, BMW is busy preparing for the local production of selected brand model for several growth markets outside Europe.

As a result, models from MINI will be rolling off assembly line beyond its home market for the first time later this year. Preparations are currently underway for the local production of the MINI Countryman at the BMW plant in Chennai, India, meeting the same stringent quality standards applied to all production of models of BMW Group.

The new assembly plant in Chennai, India, is currently being prepared just a year after BMW started selling MINI in the country. The assembly plant is expected to help meet the steadily increasing demand for MINI models in the Indian market. The Chennai site in India will first build the MINI Cooper D Countryman and the MINI One Countryman.

India has become an increasingly significant market for the BMW Group, which has its own sales arm in the country since 2007. At the start of 2012, MINI opened its first five showrooms in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, making India the 100th market in the British premium brand’s global sales network.  Between December 2012 and March 2013, MINI has sold 302 cars in India.

"BMW’s Chennai production plant was built in March 2007 and has since taken on production of the BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series as well as the BMW X1 and BMW X3 models. The facility, which has a production area covering around 13,000 square metres (approx. 140,000 sq. ft.), is located in the Mahindra World City business zone in the southwest of India, roughly 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of Chennai. State-of-the-art machine technology, highly skilled employees and advanced manufacturing processes provide all the necessary ingredients for the production of premium cars to the highest quality standards." said the press release.

For those familiar, the MINI Countryman was first launched to markets around the world two years ago. Since then, this model has become the driving force and the reason for the continuous growth of the brand. One reason could be that the MINI Countryman has managed to draw the interest of new customers’ groups around the world.

This is because the brand has managed to put the signature values and qualities MINI is known for to a new vehicle class in the brand’s own unique style. The British automaker is expected to make available an all-wheel drive version by the autumn of 2012. This version will undergo a wide range of enhancements ensuring that the already unlimited driving fun it offers is improved even more. The brand said that it will be offering certain detailed refinements to the design with an excellent choice of materials offered for the model’s interior.

This helps showcase the premium quality of this model that none of its competitors can ever match. While the ease of use of the MINI Countryman has been optimized, it also puts focus on the more contemporary practicality. Already offering an excellent amount space, the brand said that this five-door model will have the different modifications included as part of all the model variants starting 2012.

By simply opening just one of the doors in the front, the four air vents and the rings that surround the Centre Speedo immediately catch one’s eye. For the new MINI Countryman, this will now come in the shade known as Carbon Black.

There will even be the inner ring sporting high-gloss black. For those who get the Chrome Line Interior option, the inner ring will be in chrome. Either in standard trim, or even getting the options offered, the materials and colors have a new appeal which gives luster to the interior of the MINI Countryman and its high-quality personality.
