New options for 2011 Bmw X5, X6 models to be available this spring

Article by Christian A., on February 11, 2011

BMW announced that various enhancements for the 2011 X5 and X6 models will become available this spring. These include new 20-inch light-alloy wheel rims and the BMW ConnectedDrive technology enhanced with the BMW Apps feature. The interior of the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe will also get a three-seater rear seat option in April 2011.

The extra seat replaces the storage unit in the rear centre of the four-seater model. The new rear-seat variant is offered for all BMW X6 models, except for the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, and can also be ordered for the BMW X6 M.

In addition, the five-seater Sports Activity Coupe is offered as an option in Nevada and Exclusive Nappa leather as well as BMW Individual Merino leather, encompassing the entire color range. Modifications will be made on the standard eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, as future BMW X6 vehicles will be given shift paddles on the steering wheel, operating on the same principle as that from BMW M cars.

The 20-inch wheels will come in Y-spoke design and with a Black high gloss finish. These are combined with mixed tires measuring 275/40 R 20 at the front and 315/35 R 20 at the rear. Comfort Access will also include vicinity lighting integrated in the exterior door handles.

By the spring of 2010, the 2011 BMW X5 will be writing the newest chapter in its story as the first Sports Activity Vehicle in the world. The first BMW X5 was launched in late 1999 as a 2000 model year, which at that time transformed the automotive landscape. When it was launched, it confirmed that the linear control signature, responsiveness, and driving dynamics BMW models are known for were compatible with versatility, utility, as well as other-roads capabilities.

For the 2011 version, it will come with an updated design and new powertrains. The 2011 BMW X5 is expected to debut in North America during the 2010 New York International Auto Show. The innovative design elements and the new powertrains are attributed to the brand’s designers and engineers who specifically made 4,000 new parts for the new BMW X5. In addition to the X5 Advanced Diesel xDrive35d engine that many are familiar with, two powertrains will be introduced as well which include the BMW X5 xDrive50i and the BMW X5 xDrive35i.

All of the models will have an updated design aimed at improving the aesthetic look and excellent focus of the X5 brand. Meanwhile the design of the body is embodied by the well-balanced proportions that help highlight the agility and powerful presence of the 2011 BMW X5. The combination of the short body overhangs on the front and rear, long wheelbase, and light-alloy large wheels result in a visual balance of the vehicle’s front and rear portions.

Its wheel arches have been carefully flared and with its square shape, provides an indication of its terrain capability and all-wheel drive traction. Starting from both the front wheels and the rear wheels, the body lines stretch upwards showing the brand’s almost perfect front and rear 50-50 weight distribution, a feature that is crucial to the legendary driving dynamic of the BMW X5. Meanwhile the sides are gracefully stretched across the horizontal like of each of the side.

While the surface of the hood manages to flow effortlessly to the waistline, the pronounced and inclined contour line that are at the same level as the door handle starts from the arches of the front wheel and goes to the rear of the BMW X5. These character lines represent stability, presence, and power. Despite the uniquely contoured hood, the addition of dual round headlights and the BMW kidney grille results in the BMW X5 having a more expressive front end which suggests presence and power. The updated look of the BMW X5 starts with the front fascia that has been redesigned as well as the position of its standard fog lamps.

As a result of more elements that are painted in body color, its front end has the feeling of being lower. In addition, since the size of its central air intakes and outer air intakes have been increased, it provides a hint of the increased output of the engine. Furthermore, the black trim located on the body’s bottom edge has been made narrower. Extending through the whole width of the BMW X5's central air intake is the silver protection plate with the matte-finish.

This helps emphasize the muscular features of the SAV and highlights its new character. Other exciting new design features include the fog lamps and the dual round Xenon Adaptive headlights that have been placed not only higher but even closer to its kidney grille. In addition, the new headlight fittings underscore its sporting and high quality goals. The BMW X5 continues to have the brand’s signature corona rings which also function as its daytime driving lights and position lights. Its rear apron even matches with the front end’s graphic structure.

In addition, the surrounds of its dual exhaust pipes are not only intricately designed but have been painted in the same color as its body in order to accentuate its first-class character. Meanwhile in the middle is the silver protection component with the matte finish which highlights the durability, strength, and suitability for other-road use.

Press Release

For the most discerning requirements: BMW X5 and BMW X6 present a new range of special options for spring 2011

Munich. Superior handling, commanding traction and characteristic styling are key contributors to the stand-out position the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models enjoy among the premium all-wheel-drive vehicles of their segment. Spring 2011 sees the introduction of specific additions to the range of special options to ratchet up the appeal even further. Among other features, new 20-inch light-alloy wheel rims are available for both models, while the choice of BMW ConnectedDrive technology has been augmented by the innovative BMW Apps feature. Meanwhile, a three-seater rear seat option making its debut in April 2011 adds greater flexibility to the usage of the interior of the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé, which started out as a four-seater model.

The new rear-seat variant is available for all BMW X6 models with the exception of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, and can also be ordered for the BMW X6 M. The extra seat replaces the storage unit in the rear centre of the four-seater model. The five-seater Sports Activity Coupé is also optionally available in Nevada and Exclusive Nappa leather as well as BMW Individual Merino leather, encompassing the entire colour range. Another novelty is the operation of the standard eight-speed Sport automatic transmission. In future, the BMW X6 will feature shift paddles on the steering wheel whose operating logic follows the principle familiar from BMW M cars: for manual shifting of the eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, the right paddle is used for upshifts and the left for downshifts.

For the BMW X5 and BMW X6 alike, the choice of alloy wheels has been extended by a further option that positively enhances both the car's dynamic cornering behaviour and its appearance. The 20-inch wheels in Y-spoke design and with a Black high gloss finish are combined with mixed tyres measuring 275/40 R 20 at the front and 315/35 R 20 at the rear. From spring 2011, Comfort Access – likewise available for both models – will include vicinity lighting integrated in the exterior door handles. In addition to automatic unlocking and activation of the ignition, this feature provides effective illumination of the car's surroundings as soon as the electronic control of Comfort Access has recognised the car key carried by the driver.

Following directly on from the market launch, the extended range of BMW ConnectedDrive services also becomes available for the BMW X5 and the BMW X6. In future both models will be able to avail themselves of the BMW Apps special option. This feature enables owners of an Apple iPhone to stay in touch with the online services Facebook and Twitter while in the car, as well as receive radio stations from all over the world, irrespective of the car's location, thanks to a web radio function. In addition to the current BMW ConnectedDrive application, customers will have a range of functions and apps available for free download at the Apple App Store.

With these latest innovations, BMW is systematically pursuing its ongoing product optimisation for these two models built at its US plant in Spartanburg. Most recently, last year's market launch of the new BMW X5 and the comprehensive upgrading of the BMW X6's drive technology gave a further boost to BMW's success in this competitive environment. As well as the continued rise in BMW X5 sales in 2010, global growth in demand for the BMW X6 is also feeding the exceptional market success of the BMW X models. In just three years, more than 110,000 units of these Sports Activity Coupés have already been sold, 46,404 of them in 2010 alone. The BMW X5 posted worldwide sales of 102,178 units in the last business year.
