Auto Bild reports that the Peugeot 608 is set to be launched in 2014. Poor sales of the Peugeot 607 had led to the suspension of plans to create a new flagship. However, the French manufacturer has started a new strategy comparable to how Mercedes-Benz’s R-Class was managed. According further to Auto Bild, the 608 will be a big luxury crossover, with a length of 5 meters. But it will be sleeker and sportier than the R-Class.
Peugeot 608 is inspired by the new HX1 Concept while it will utilize the latest PSA Group innovations, consisting of the Hybrid4 platform which uses diesel and electric engines and can be used to make various car types.
These include four-wheel drive and zero emissions models. In addition, the 608 could use a larger variant of this platform, with a 200 hp diesel engine mated to a 95 hp electric engine.
608 is expected to be more expensive and its price may even exceed €50,000 due to its luxurious elements and range-topping extras. With this price tag, the 608 enters the premium segment where it competes with prominent and established models.
When Peugeot decided to discontinue the 605, there was the expectation that a new model would be released. Thus in October of 1999, the company launched the 607. While it still had the chassis that was in the previous version, the design of the exterior had a more contemporary look. New as well was the engine line-up which included a 2.2-liter petrol engine, a 3.0-liter petrol engine, and a 2.2-liter diesel engine.
There was even the nine-stage electronic AMVAR damping control. Its standard equipment was considered as top of the line with air conditioning, electric windows, and CD player. Safety features included 8 airbags, a tire pressure monitor, central locking, and anti-lock braking, all fitted as standard. While it was unveiled during the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, it did not receive good reviews.
Celebrated motoring journalist Jeremy Clarkson, of the Sunday Times, for example said he did not like the 607. In his review published in December 2000, he claimed that the 607 was not able to meet the standards expected from the brand. He added that while he did not like the 807, the 607 was even worse and said it was the worst car created.
It could be one reason why it was only in 2007, which was 7 years after it was unveiled, that the 607 was eventually used. It was none other than President Nicolas Sarkozy of France who had one when he was inaugurated on May 16, 2007. However it would not be the same as when it was launched as this version was modified to match the new 2004 style of the 607.
In particular, the front portion was updated. That it was chosen for official use in its home market of France was not surprising. This was because the Vel Satis by Renault was deemed as unconventional. Former Presidents of France from Charles DeGaulle and up to Jaqcues Chirac, had chosen the Citroën. This was later rebranded as part of indistinct subcompact cars that are typically known for their price tag.
One variation of the 607 is the 607 Paladine, which is in fact a special Landaulet version of the model. This variant was created and manufactured as a concept car with Heuliez as a partner. It is powered by the 3.0-liter V6 engine.
In terms of dimensions, this version was 5 meters (200 inches) long, meaning it was longer by as much as 500 millimeters (20 inches). It has a one-off design as the back portion comes with a retractable metallic roof, much like the ones in the 206 or the 307 CC. The interior is fitted with special leather made in partnership with Hermes.
