The first details regarding the next-generation BMW 6-Series are starting to emerge on the Web thanks to Britain’s Car Magazine. Codenamed G15, the new BMW 6-Series will become sportier, lighter and more powerful, in order to become proper rivals for the Porsche rivals.
Just like the current generation, the new 6-Series will be available in three different body styles from 2017: the 6-Series Coupe (G15), 6-Series Cabriolet (G14) and the 6-Series Gran Coupe (G16).
What’s more interesting is that for the 2017MY, the 6-Series Coupe and Cabriolet models will come down in size as BMW wants to shave around 200 kg. Meanwhile, the 6-Series Gran Coupe will get a longer wheelbase and offer more interior space.
Moreover, the next-gen BMW 6-Series derivates will receive a new advanced modular architecture known internally as 35up and recently renamed CLAR, the short for cluster architecture.
The CLAR uses materials such as carbon fiber, high-strength steel sections, magnesium and titanium accents and a variety of aluminum alloys. An active aero kit is also expected to be offered as an option across the range, while the BMW M6 will receive it as standard.
When it comes to engines, the BMW 640i will receive a 3.0-liter in-line six with 347 hp, while the 640d will get a 3.0-liter in-line six with 333 hp. The 650i will get the 4.4-liter V8 with 476 hp, while the M6 will get the 4.4-liter V8 with 600 hp.
Four-wheel drive xDrive models will continue to be offered, while a hybrid version is not currently planned.

BMW offers two engine variants for the inaugural launch of the 6-Series Convertible: an 8-cylinder engine producing 300kW / 407hp is the powerplant of the BMW 650i Convertible. On the other hand, an exclusive variant of the 6-cylinder in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo, direct injection and Valvetronic, producing 235kW / 320hp, is fitted in the BMW 640i Convertible. The two engine variants are both coupled with an eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox while an Auto Start-Stop function is installed in the BMW 640i Convertible as part of the standard-fitted BMW EfficientDynamics for the 640i variant.
