Mercedes-AMG, the performance brand of German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz, has presented the first vehicle it developed in-house – the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. This performance vehicle features a gullwing door, thus earning it the name “Gullwing.”
While it still offers the everyday practicality and safety typical of a Mercedes, it also provides purist and unique styling and superior driving dynamics characteristic of an AMG unit. While in the process of developing the Gullwing, developers at AMG collaborated with specialists from the Mercedes Technology Center (MTC) in Sindelfingen.
These people from AMG and MTC aimed to transform SLS AMG 'Gullwing' into the perfect amalgamation of the strong qualities of the Mercedes-Benz and AMG brands. Its unique gullwing design and its low-slung front-mid engine set are all well conveyed through its proportions.
Likewise, the SLS AMG features an optimized lightweight body concept – as it boasts of having an aluminum chassis and spaceframe body. Because of this construction, the SLS AMG is much lighter than if it is made from steel. In fact, SLS AMG has a planned DIN kerb weight of 1620 kg, excluding the driver.
Its aluminum chassis and body as well as its gullwing doors are not the only elements that are technologically advanced with the SLS AMG.
Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, remarked that the new SLS AMG is bound to make things more exhilarating for all car enthusiasts.
He expressed that the SLS AMG will become one of the most alluring sports cars. On the other hand, Volker Mornhinweg, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, remarked that with the SLS-AMG, customers will be able to experience the expertise Mercedes-AMG built from over four decades of motor racing.
